Only temporary gigs, and not many of them.
Laid off 10/16 from the machine shop I was working in. Haven’t found a thing so far. Jobs in any field are extremely hard to come by in this area.
I was laid off 12/11/08
I worked as an auto industry analyst.
I’ve not found work, and I don’t expect to soon; I live in Michigan.
I beat the rush and was laid off in July or August. Been collecting UI since then. I was on a construction site as the quality control manager. Haven’t been looking for work because I’m sick of the whole goddamned rut, and have enough in the bank to retire. Screw 'em all.
Were you laid off?
Yes.
What industry did you get laid off from?
High-tech
Have you found work yet?
No. It’s only been 36 hours.
If so…What industry did you find work in?
Frankly I wish I could just go live under a fucking rock somewhere at this point. I am so tired of the dog-eat-dog work mentality that has been part of high-tech manufacturing for the last 8 or 9 years now. It’s a revolving door of skills and needs and shareholder expectations and fiscal performance and mergers and acquisitions.
Laid off in mid-Oct

No job yet
Only one interview, with a staffing agency. Rep told me new budgets come in January, so I’ll likely find work then.
Still cruising along in IT here in Atlanta. Watched people getting cut all around me at work. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.
To my embarrassment, I must say this recession doesn’t feel real to me because I haven’t lost my job and the only debt I have is a small, boring, non-toxic mortgage. All my friends and family are still rocking along just fine (knock on wood).
Were you laid off? Does Job Elimination count? Then, yes.
What industry did you get laid off from? Corrugated shipping container manufacturing.
Have you found work yet? Found out today, have two lines in the water already.

RIF on December 2nd
What industry did you get laid off from?
Investment management
**Have you found work yet? **
Haven’t looked yet. I’m taking it easy through the holidays, and then I’ll hit it hard in January.
If so…What industry did you find work in?
I’m fortunate in that skills aren’t industry-specific. I’m glad to be out of finance, and wouldn’t want to go back even if there were jobs, so I’m looking at it as an opportunity to find something I like better. I’m optimistic, dammit!
Were you laid off?
Yes – mass layoff two weeks before Thanksgiving
What industry did you get laid off from?
High Tech
Have you found work yet?
No, but I’ve had no shortage of places to apply right in my area, and have had several interviews. I’m optimistic, simply because of all the possibilities.

Me, I think?
I’m a database developer. The database file controls access via account and password and mine has full access of course. I have an email account from that company, by which they send me emails, and an iChat (AIM) account they use to chat with me in real time, and, finally, I can remote into the server using remote access software if I need to check anything going on at the server level.
This morning my email program reports ERR Access Denied in the process of trying to fetch my email. I try logging into the db and my account has been disabled. I try remoting into the server and THAT account has been suspended. Try logging into chat and my chat id has been deleted or suspended as well. Sounds pretty freaking FIRED doesn’t it?
Well I had an 11 AM phone call with the company owner scheduled, to discuss a personnel issue. I expected (as any sane person would, yes? I myself am not a sane person but I can usually play one pretty effectively…) to be informed at that point that the comany had decided that the personnel issue was me and that my contributions were not required by the company any more.
INSTEAD I have been informed that “access” (not MY access, mind you, just “access”) to the database “has been suspended” until they sort out some concerns about backup strategy. (But other people are logged in, I have confirmed that back-channel).
In the course of the conversation I was asked to ‘speak’ to someone about a certain matter and remarked at that time that doing so might prove a bit difficult insofar as my email account had also been suspended. Hmm, <cough> umm, well do you have her phone number?
I assume I’m pretty damn jobless, but for some reason they aren’t letting the shoe drop. They aren’t being very subtle about it.
Do I have to wait until I am formally informed that I am unemployed before I file for unemployment? Are they obligated to continue paying me up until they so inform me?
I’m fortunate to be working. We do IT for a first tier automotive supplier. It’s nerve-wracking, but so far, I’m ok. I’ve worked as a support person in a gajillion industries, so I’m somewhat confident I could find something should things go south.
