Barry Bonds will hit 274 home runs. 'Kay? 'Kay.
So how about them Mariners?

They lost 2 of 3 to Anaheim last weekend.
Bonds is now at 39 HRs and an even .900 SLG. He needs 32 more HRs to break the record and he has 87 more games to do it.
Bonds finally hits number 40. His slugging percentage has dropped to .830, which is still the best in the league. Luis Gonzalez has the second-best SLG at .740.
I think maybe I should have asked “How many walks will Barry Bonds get?” He has 92 now. No one else has more than 72.
Bonds has finally come back to earth slightly, and is now approximately at McGwire’s '98 pace. He currently projects to hit 69 HRs, but I predict he’ll hit no more 65. Probably 63.
Of course, Bonds didn’t do squat. So there.
Bonds will hit 49.
spooje - Is that 49 total, or 49 more?
As a Cardinal fan, I’m just glad to see Bonds slow down a bit. Here’s hoping he only hits 69.
Last night he hit 41 and 42, Crunchy. He is now tied with Mickey Mantle on the all-time list.
Dammit. I really don’t want to wish anything bad on the guy, but DAMMIT! In another 10 homeruns I’ll be left with no choice but to get a Barry Bonds voo-doo doll from ebay or something.
He is notoriously weak in the clutch, and admits he chokes. The closer he gets, the tighter he’ll get.
Last night, in Arizona, Bonds hit 43 and 44. #44 was a grand slam. The first HR put him past Mickey Mantle on the career list. He now has 538 HRs in all.
Speaking of Arizona, Luis Gonzalez now has 41 HRs. Will people get as excited about this competition as they did when McGwire and Sosa were battling in '98?

I certainly am. I have nothing against Barry Bonds, and Luis Gonzalez is such a great guy by all accounts - plus, they both came out of absolutely nowhere with this. Even as a Cub fan (who is fully cognizant that there is no way in hell Sosa’s getting near Bonds’ or Gonzalez’s stats) I’m really enjoying this season’s home run derby.
I’ll hold off on getting the voodoo doll just yet. I’ll wait and see if he has 55 HRs going into September.
While some people are following this race, I doubt it’s going to get as much widespread attention as the McGwire-Sosa race of '98. That year, they were chasing a record that was 37 years old. In '99, they went at it again - both players hitting 60+ homers for the second year in a row - but the media pressure and attention was noticeably less. Now here it is, only 3 years after the record was set and only 2 years removed from a second homerun race. The record is too new and has already been chased once. It doesn’t have that aura of unbreakability to draw the attention as Maris’s record and Ruth’s record before his had.
He’s just hit number 45. Fastest ever to 45, one game ahead of McGwire.
DAMMIT!
Ok, I’m off to ebay to look for voodoo dolls, I don’t care what I said in my last post.
You better get it before September 7, when the Giants return to Denver for a three-game series. (OTOH, Bonds didn’t get any HRs the last time they were in Denver.)
Last night against Pittsburgh, Bonds hit #46. He needs 24 more to tie McGwire and the Giants have 54 more games on their schedule.
You know this news would be so much easier to take if the Cardinals were more than 3 games over .500.
Obviously the voodoo doll isn’t working. Time to escalate the situation to sacrifice.
I’d like to sacrifice Barry Bonds, but I’m hoping a bucket of live bait will do the trick. (I don’t know where to get a chicken or goat and this is all I could afford from the pet store.)
I would like to point out that hitting 24 home runs in 54 games is no mean feat in itself. The Giants are going to be in a pennant race, so Bonds is going to be pitched to very carefully in September.
Oh, I agree. In fact, it may be the fact that the Cardinals were not in a pennant race in '98 that McGwire was able to hit 70.
You’d have to make that 53 games now, anyway. They played the Pirates in a day game today (Giants won, 3-0) and Bonds did not play. (I think he usually takes off day games after playing a night game.)
And let’s not forget Luis Gonzalez, who now has 42.
