How many home runs will Barry Bonds hit this season?

He just hit #64.

I’d like to see him do it, by god.

I would rather him come up short than make it by 1 or 2 shots. If yhe is gonna break the record, he should at least do it by 8 or 9 jacks.

Bonds hit #65 and #66 yesterday in San Diego. He claims Tony Gwynn helped him with his swing!

Maybe Bonds should hire Gwynn to be his hitting coach after Gwynn retires.

Actually, Barry was lobbying Gwynn, to be Gwynn’s hitting coach when he takes the head coach job at SDSU. Barry was needling Gwynn to the effect that someone had to teach his kids how to hit with power, and Gwynn was just a punch-and-judy hitter.

By the way: if you scroll up on this thread, you could see a flat-out dead-wrong prediction I made a few weeks ago. So don’t.

No. 67 was last night.

A couple of weeks ago, I thought about getting tickets to this series against L.A. only to find out that every outfield seat had already been sold. While it would have been nice to have a chance to catch an historic home run, I can’t afford to pay a scalper for the opportunity.

At this rate, if they keep pitching to him, Bonds may hit #71 before the end of the week.

heee, heee…I got tix for Friday 9/28 and Sunday 9/30…(he’ll probably hit #70 and #71 on Saturday).

sigh

I guess as a Cardinal fan my only consolation is that the Cards still hold the wild card spot (as of today anyway). That and the fact I got a Barry Bonds autographed baseball before he breaks the record. BTW, I think I predicted earlier in the thread that he’d hit 75. I’ll have to go check.

Do I win anything if I predicted it right?

Mr. Rilch just got back from the Dodgers/Giants game. He and Friend were in the lowest bleachers behind left field; in other words, The Cheap Seats. He says the Dodger fans kept up a barrage of “BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” “Barry sucks! Barry sucks!” and so forth. Bonds didn’t respond much, though at one point, he was apparently giving the finger through his glove. But it never let up: people giving him the finger with both hands, and with foam fingers. One guy was yelling, “Hey Barry! 196! 196!” Then there was “Hey, Barry…You like it in the ass?” Mr. Rilch said, “Hey Barry…Sid Bream! Sid Bream would have thrown that guy out!” It was just a constant barrage. Two Giants fans got in a fight with Dodger fans, and all four were ejected. One Giant fan forgot his orange pillow, and when he came back, it had been thrown high in the stands. Someone threw a ball at Bonds from the stands: “Hey! Way to get on that, Barry!”

He just hit #68 and it’s only the 2nd inning.

damn

Another day, another longball.

Bonds is at 69.

I don’t think fans curse and boo him because he’s going to break the record. I doubt they would boo and curse Sammy Sosa or nearly anyone else either. Fans, teammates and just about everyone else don’t like him because he is aloof and arrogant.

But alas, he only needs 2 more.

Heh-heh. He got you to say ‘69’.

(Had to add the link. :))

Those people are not real baseball fans. Why do they even bother to go? I love to boo the Dodgers, as is my right as a Giants fan, but yelling at players that they suck is so not okay. I wouldn’t yell at Shawn Green that he sucks, because he obviously doesn’t. It’s too bad that he’s playing for the Dodgers, though. A few months ago, a Dodger fan was kicked out of the game for dumping beer on Giants’ center fielder Calvin Murray. (The guy’s wife looked REALLY pissed off.) And although I am tempted to write off all Dodger fans as classless, when Barry hit #67 in LA a couple days ago, the fans leaped from their seats and screamed like they were all wearing orange and black. They were happy to see something historic, and gave Barry a standing ovation. It was very classy, and something to see - a Dodger would have to do something really incredible to get me to give him an ovation. (Although I’d be pleased if they ever beat the Diamondbacks!)

Did anyone else watch the nationally broadcast game today? Is it a rule that all Fox announcers have to suck? Or do they just do that on their own?

How many homers will Barry Bonds hit?

I’ll say 55.

(just tryin’ to be honest— that was my prediction in late April)

The Padres yesterday threw Bonds 11 pitches–1 of which may have been a strike. Barry was so shocked to see it that he grounded feebly to short. 0-for-1, 2 walks, + HBP.

6 games left: 3 at Houston, 3 at home vs. LA. With Houston still in a pennant race, and the Dodgers being the Dodgers, Barry may get nothing to hit, ever again.

If season averages hold: in 3 games against Houston, Barry will get 12 plate appearances, hit 1 HR and draw 3 walks. In 3 games against LA, he will get 13.1 plate appearances, draw 2.4 walks (shattering Ruth’s record) and hit 0.5 HR (squeaking by McGwire). However, the low HR total against the Dodgers reflects Barry’s difficulty hitting in Dodger Stadium–but I don’t have a breakdown of Barry vs. Dodgers at Pac Bell.

Actually, since you can’t hit .5 of a homerun, if those averages hold, he won’t squeak by McGwire with 70.5 homeruns. He’ll end with 70, tying the record. The .5 HR vs. the Dodgers means he has a 50/50 shot at hitting 71.

I saw something funny (but mean) on the news last night: When Bonds hit #69, some wise guys in the stadium threw other baseballs into the water to try to trick the people in boats waiting for Bonds’ homer. Written on each ball was “SUCKER”.

The Cards just beat the Brewers 5-1.

Currently, the Giants are helping the Cards by beating the Astros 4-1 in the 8th and the Astros are helping McGwire by not pitching to Bonds.

If things hold steady, the Cards will be tied for 1st in the NL Central and McGwrie will be Major League’s only 70-HR hitter for at least one more day.
