How many Nintendo games was Mario in?

I just got Super Mario Sunshine today (hey, I’m a Nintendo loyalist), and I’m wondering if there’s a definitive list of games Nintendo’s mascot has appeared in.

As a basic start, there’s the basic Mario series:
Super Mario Bros (introducing the Princess, Bowser, Toad, and the rest of the classic cast)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (introducing more villains borrowed from some Japanese import)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World (introducing Yoshi)
Mario 64
…and the aforementioned Mario Sunshine.

Then, of course, there’s the sporting series:
Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf.

And of course, we have to mention
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
and the original Mario Bros.

I know there’s a kajillion others. Dope away.

You forgot the Game Boy and Virtual Boy. I have no idea which games he was in, but you should take those systems into account.

Note, though, that some games on this long list just feature characters from the Mario universe, not necessarily Mario himself.

Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Land
Dr. Mario

I’d also assume that he was in all the Wario games, too.

He was an official in NES Tennis, and both Punch-Out! and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!

Mario is in a LOT of games. A very lot.

If you mean original Nintendo, don’t forget the (more) obscure titles – Mario is Missing and Mario Time Machine, for example. (Has anyone played Mario is Missing? We bought it, sans manual, recently in a binge of NES collecting. It is one weird game.) Wasn’t he also in Yoshi and Yoshi’s Cookie for NES?

I don’t think that ref is ‘officially’ Mario; just looks like him. A lot of early Nintendo games have similar graphics – look at Legend of Zelda and the forgotten game Clu Clu Land.

Oh, yeah. One more from memory (I own this one, too). I believe Mario is in NES Open Golf for NES as well.

Are you counting pirated games and hacks? There are some truly unusual games where Mario has been stuck in, or where other games have been converted to Mario games. (There are lots of NES pirate game sites, so I can’t find the one I was looking for, but there is a lot of information if you are interested.)

If you’d like to play some recent hacks, try http://www.i-mockery.com/romhacks/ . “Ernie and the Muppets Take it All Off” is my personal favorite, but Super KKK Brothers, Super Bald Brothers and Satanic Freak Brothers are probably more in topic for this thread.

Well, I think all the obscure ones i was going to mention have been mentioned (NES Golf, Mike Tyson’s Punch Out and NES Tennis) except Mario Paint.

Someone already mentioned Super Mario Land, but don’t forget about Super Mario Land II, Wario Land, and the Super Mario Kart: Super Circuit (for Game Boy Advance).

I believe Mario is also in Game Boy Tetris, as he shows up in the end if you beat Level 9 with 5 high starting blocks.

Also, Super Mario World II: Yoshi’s Island

And Mario Party

And Smash Bros. (which also includes many other Nintendo icons).

There’s probably a lot more

Don’t forget Wrecking Crew for the NES.

Not on the Nintendo, but still with Mario: My husband, when he was younger, had a computer “Mario Teaches Typing” game.

Don’t forget about Pinball where Mario controlled a platform in a side game to catch a falling Daisy.

Paper Mario

And to count all of them: Mario Party 1, 2,3, and soon to be 4.

I would also assume he makes an appearance in Luigi’s Mansion since Luigi is trying to find Mario.

Mario’s trapped in a painting in Luigi’s Mansion. They make a classic Star Wars joke: “I like my favorite decoration right where he is.”

…oh, and Mario popped up in Mike Tyson’s Punch Out as the referree.

This is a great question, especially with the recent release of Super Mario Sunshine.

Here’s another list of games featuring the plumber. They list them by system, and by Mushroom Kingdom character which appears (Mario, Luigi, Wario, Toad, etc.). I can count 76 unique games for Nintendo’s own six systems in which Mario stars or cameos.

I played Mario Is Missing (I believe I did; it’s the one where Luigi and Yoshi go to different cities in the world looking for clues to find him, right?).

That game actually helped me in my school’s geography bee back in 7th grade; I can’t remember the exact question, but it was about a cathedral somewhere in Russia, and I knew the city (which was the answer you needed to give) it was in (Moscow) because it was part of a clue in Mario Is Missing! That was actually the final question of the geography bee, and I won it because of a video game.

Quoth Windwalker:

The NES version, as well. Mario and Luigi do that Russian kick dance.

Were any of the Donkey Kong games released on Nintendo, before Kong became a hero? That’s where Mario got his start.

Yes indeed. I’ve got “Donkey Kong Classics” right here for the NES, which has DK and DK Junior on it.

Was Mario in DK3? I think it has somebody called Ralph the Gardener or something.

Wasn’t he spraying insecticide in Donkey Kong III?. And although Super Mario’s I, II, and III for the NES have been mentioned, #2 in Japan didn’t make it out in this country. IIRC they did some number shifting for the US, but Japan’s #2 came out on the “Super Mario Collection” (or whatever it was called) for the SNES.

After previewing this I realize its poorly worded and hard to understand. Oh well.

No, that was Stanley the Bugman, who is a separate character according to Nintendo and the trophy gallery in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Some old Mario games are being updated w/ graphics and voices for GameBoy Advance. I wonder if they count as separate games. So far there’s:

Super Mario Advance
Super Mario Advance 2
Mario Kart Advance

I think that’s it. I lost my GameBoy Advance several months ago and stopped keeping track.
