I think Trump is done with press conferences at this point. When he admitted that he purposely spoke falsely, he lost his war with the press. He handed them a pretext to pin down his meaning by asking “is this sarcastic like the bleach thing, or do you really mean it?”
He can’t operate in an environment where his statements can be pinned down, so I think we’re going to see him stick to very safe statements in very safe environments from here on out.
Yes, he can, because ultimately all he wants is just to pander to the suckers who won’t pin him down anyway. The other people–who might pin him down–are more a distraction. The “briefings” are just substitute rallies. He tolerates the scientists and the reporters because they have to be there to make it a “briefing.”
In a post a day or so ago in one of these Trump-bashing threads (sorry, I can’t find it right now), somebody (was it ThelmaLou?) predicted that it would be at most 48 hours before somebody dies from ingesting disinfectant.
Has anybody seen any news of that actually happening? (We know it happened with the hydroxychloroquine.)
We’ve seen the news that public agencies in several states have been swamped with calls about it. I’ve seen in some articles that among the many people asking about it, there was also many calls regarding people having actual “contact” with disinfectants, whatever that means, but nobody actually hospitalized or died.
Has anybody here actually heard of anything more serious happening yet?
I have seen anecdotal reports suggesting an uptick in cases of ingestion of household cleaning products. But some small number of people are ALWAYS drinking bleach and lysol. I accidentally drank bleach myself one time (protip - don’t drink bleach, the negatives far outweigh the positives).
Point being, you’ll find bleach-drinking news stories from last month, and you’ll find the same number of stories next month. We’ll never really be certain how much to blame Trump until someone does a proper scientific study.
This defense could have worked for 24 hours. Trump is a genius thinking outside the box; even if his suggested remedies don’t work they may inspire researchers not as busy as Trump to come up with good ideas. This is the genius with a very big you-know-what doing what he does best.
Sure, the suggestion is still stupid, but not so much as to be obviously stupid to one of Trump’s fellow morons.
But then 24 hours later Trump goes off the rails. He tells us the entire speech was a “sarcastic prank” to get back at reporters who were asking him mean questions. There goes the “stable genius” defense.
Even morons can’t believe that sarcastic pranks are what we want from President now, can they? Only imbeciles could support the man now. (And idiots I suppose — are idiots allowed to vote?)
Yet the oaf still has widespread support; America is sustaining a severe reverse-Flynn effect.
I find my belief in the intelligence of the average American has gone up a bit since most people are calling the poison centers *before *they drink/ingest the bleach.
And yeah, it should be a no-brainer but it should also be a no-brainer that if POTUS says something on national TV, you can assume it is good advice.
I’m guessing that the immediate shit-storm caused by the Fake Media accurately reporting how dumb this was had some affect on people checking before swigging.
I have some confidence that our great leader does not intend to kill anyone although he certainly doesn’t care if he does. What he intends is to create a triumphant narrative for himself. He does this, has always done this, by spewing out a bizarre stream of consciousness rant with the idea that something positive will stick, and everything else he will just deny he said. It absolutely works with his true believers. They will invariably point to the few sane things he has said or done and mysteriously manage to elide the 99% garbage.
What he intends is for one of these random blatherings to be enough on the mark that he can claim it was his idea all along, that he saved everyone through his genius. Collateral damage is meaningless in trumpworld.
I don’t think he even has that much foresight. He just says things in the moment that he thinks will put up a bullshit triumphant narrative to his mindless base. Later on, he’ll take credit for something he didn’t do if it’s in the news, whether he talked about it before or not. He just pulls things out of his ass in the moment.
In the rallies, he does the same thing, and then uses their response as a way to see what works. It’s not even so much a strategy as a behavior which his reptilian brain has evolved to use. In these “briefings” he can’t do that, though, so he throws a tantrum and tweets “fake news” when his bullshit is called out.
Just read this in a Huffington Post entry today, and my first thought was “Yeah, there’s definitely a body I’d like to hit ‘with tremendous force’ and see what would happen.”
