I went to a special “men’s salon” once, they had a special- the “works” for $100. Cute, flirty stylists (not super sexy, but attentive). It was worth doing once.
I get my hair cut, it costs $10. On occasion, I get a pedicure, if the pedicurist will get in there and remove slightly ingrown toenails and do a foot massage too.
Last year, when my hair looked like crap - probably $150-200. (Most of which was shampoo & conditioner alone. I go through a lot of conditioner. And it has to be the right type - there’s no worse news than “we’ve reformulated our conditioner!” because they never reformulate it in a way that it still works on my hair.)
This year, probably I’m guessing I’ll pay $1200 or so. But my hair looks great because I finally found someone who could do something with it. She’s not cheap, but definitely worth it.
Mostly just shampoo, conditioner, and mousse. I just got my first salon haircut in years, so add that $32–so probably $80 or a little more? Less for the past 10 years or so, when my mom would just chop my hair evenly.
My husband spends only for his shampoo–I cut his hair. Same for my kids.
I get about 8 cuts a year at $12 per for $96.
I go through about $15 worth of shampoo. Suave Daily and Head and Shoulders every third day. My hair stays fairly short.
If I add in razors cartridges, maybe another $30 to $40 and a shaving mirror for the shower another $10.
I want to say that I don’t consider $90 for a cut & color to be extraordinary. That said, I’m both cheap & lazy when it comes to my hair, so I don’t spend that much.
I get my hair cut every other month or so, and have it cut at WalMart. This is where the ‘lazy’ part comes in – I’m at WalMart anyway, so I get my hair cut there instead of making an appointment and going someplace ‘better.’ Basic cut & style is $18 + $4 tip + $22. Times 6 = $132 a year.
I color my own hair – also every 2 months. So long as I keep my hair short to medium, it takes one box of color to color my hair. My brand is about $7 a box, when I buy it on sale, which I always do. 8 times 6 = $42
I buy drugstore shampoo & conditioner, which last me a long time as I only wash my hair every other day. I also buy drugstore gel & hairspray (which also last a long time, since I don’t use them every day either.) I’m sure $50 a year covers these purchases.
So I spend $224 a year on my head. Not bad. In fact, I spend less than my husband does – he gets his hair cut 18 times a year (at $15 a cut including tip), and uses more shampoo than I do (about $40 a year, just for shampoo which is all he uses). So he spends $310 a year on his head.
This doesn’t count what I spend on my eyebrows, though (about $180 a year to have them waxed); my fingernails ($324 a year for fake nails), and feet ($150 for pedicures). Nor does it count what I spend on makeup, or skincare junk (Og only knows…)
I just passed this intel on to my husband and he said, “Well, that’s cheap, considering how pretty you are.” Aww!
I get my hair cut (now that it’s longer) every four to six months because I’m growing it out from a super-short pixie cut to, well, as long as it will go. I only go when Great Clips is having a sale or has coupons. Average price $10 (including tip) so $10 x 3 times a year=$30.
I get a big bottle of Pert Plus every oh, three months. It’s $5. $5 x 4 times a year=$20
I use a tangle tamer (.99 a bottle) once in a blue moon, so a bottle lasts me two or three years. Um, we'll call that .50.
I buy hair bands for pony tails and they get stolen by the cats fairly often. A bag costs $1.50, I go through maybe two a year. $1.50 x 2= $3.00.
16 bucks for a haircut about 10 times a year, it really bugs me when it gets too long specially in the back. Hmm maybe forty for shampoo and hair gel, so im going to go with an even 200.
Heh. I get my hair cut once, maybe twice a year at Great Clips. So that’s about $35, including tip. We buy our shampoo and conditioner at Sam’s Club. It’s about $7 for like 80 ounces of shampoo and another $7 for 40 ounces of conditioner. So about $21 on hair products (for me and hubby). In an expensive year, I spend $15 on styling products. So, at maximum expenditure, $71 a year.
Female, 26, hair is slightly wavy and currently above my shoulders.
My stylist recently moved from the Hair Cuttery ($12 per cut) to a “real” salon ($42 per cut) so my costs just went up considerably. I will not give her up, though! She’s the only stylist I’ve had who pays attention to my hair type and my wishes. We are currently growing out a very short pixie cut and going back to long hair, and she’s been working with me to ensure that my hair doesn’t look horrible during this interminable “in-between” stage. I go about three or four times a year for shaping and trimming. Right now it’s shoulder length, and will be permed once it’s mid-back length.
Adding in the costs of shampoo, conditioner, hair goo, and assorted barrettes and ponytail holders that help keep me from losing paitence and hacking all my hair off, I’d estimate that this year I will spend about $300 on my hair.
Pureology Shampoos are usually $25-30 a pop (but they last a long time)
Hair products: again, I buy either Pureology or Bumble and Bumble these days so it ranges from $20-30 per styling product.
I go to an Aveda salon that isn’t too bad. It’s $50 for the haircut and I tip her at 20%. Every 2 months or so, though I tend to get lazy.
I don’t know, it’s a lot of money but I have curly, complicated hair and it’s worth investing in for me. I’ve learned my lesson on appearance issues-I’d rather spend the money on personal training and a few odds and ends like makeup and hair. I tend to wear classically cut clothes these days and it’s just not worth it for me to buy more.
I guess I tend to spend a lot of money on (trying) to look good, but I don’t drink, drive an Econobox, club or any of the other shit people tend to spend their money on. My personal money goes into this stuff and I maintain a proper savings rate, so I don’t consider it a waste.
Put me in the $1000 range. Maybe a bit less. I love going to the salon. I’ve been with my stylist for years now and we’re good friends. I enjoy the chit chat. And it’s pretty much the only luxury I allow myself regularly. They always offer a glass of wine or a beer in addition to coffee, tea and water. Often, by not always they have pastries.
Highlights, color, cut is about $150 tip included. I go about every 8 weeks or so.
Whatever Ms Hook finds on sale for shampoo and conditioner. She buys a bunch at a time, so there might be a 2-3 year supply on hand at any one time. Who knows, can’t be much though (now for her hair, it’s Katy-bar-the-door, in the $800-1,000 range. But that’s fine with me it makes her feel good and her hair looks great.)
In the past 3 years I’ve had my hair cut once. And I got $645 for it, sorta. There was a fund raiser for the son of a friend who was wounded in Iraq. There were adult beverages involved and the first thing I knew was my pony tail was being raffled off. And the bastards actually cut if off. I thought right up to the last moment that the govener would call with a reprieve. It lives in a drawer in my office now.
So, just for bragging rights, I’m gonna claim that as income and a deduction to a 501c organization, so say I’m AHEAD $600 for the past three years
Righ now I’m sporting about a foot long pony tail.
I’m in the Cut My Own Hair Club. $20 for a pair of Wahl clippers that lasts a couple years. I don’t just buzz it, I leave the top alot longer. I’ve been doing it for the last 8 years or so (since I was 16), and I need a friend to make the base of my neck even, but I’ve gotten pretty good at the rest of it. I don’t wash my hair, either, I just rinse it real good. It tends to be too fuzzy if I get all the grease out, but rinsing it with real hot water takes out just the right ammount.
