How much money do you spend on your hair in a year?

Between the two of us - probably about six to seven linear feet of hair - around $65 a year. He’s cutting his hair this summer though and I refuse to allow him to go to Fantastic Sam’s or the like, plus I’ll be doing a pity cut, so that number will easily quadruple. We trim each other’s hair for the most part. I got long layers put in last fall for $20 at my university salon, which was my first salon trip for my hair in 8 years.

Female, 25.

Edit: I just realized I’m spending way too much on hair.

Lately it is about $100 a year

6 haircuts a year 15 bucks each
10 bucks in shampoo.

In the past I used to spend 120 bucks a haircut (two tone color) then probably 100 bucks a year in shampoo conditioner and styling supplies. That was a time when hooking up at clubs was much more important to me.

For the ladies who get their hair colored only a few times a year - I’m guessing you’re not trying to cover gray, are you? My roots are sufficiently noticeable after 4 weeks that I need to have it redone.

I used to color myself, but the results were progressively less… pleasing… so my hairdresser does it now. $75 x 12 = $900.

Hair trimmed once every three months, add $15 bucks to the coloring. $15 x 4 = $60.

Shampoos and conditioners generally last me about two months a bottle, then there’s the assorted styling stuff… I’d say about another $100 or so per year.

Bottom line is that I’m in the $1000+/year club. It’s my one significant personal indulgence, so I’m okay with that.

I spend right around the same about. $125 per visit; cut and highlights. I try to do that every 3-4 months. I buy grocery store shampoo but I get the more expensive ones. I don’t feel guilty about it because it’s a lot less than women who have to cover gray every 4-6 weeks. However, my girl doesn’t do much in the pampering department. I go to her because she’s convenient, but I’m sure I’d be as happy or happier somewhere else. It’s hard to break up with a hairdresser!

Gay male 38. I get my hair cut twice a week about $20 or so plus a couple hundred on hair products.

Probably about $750 or so per year.

Twice a week? Wow. What sort of 'do are you sporting? I don’t think I could stand being in the chair that often. I can barely stand it four times per year!

At the moment, my dad cuts my hair with an electric razor (no guard) every four to eight weeks, so no haircut expenditures. I’ll count some of the shampoo as mine, so say ~$8 every two months=~$48. I don’t know if I’ll be cutting my own hair in college, but that would save a lot of money, since I don’t like having hair long enough to come and it’s usually too cold to get it totally shaved. Ideally, I’d live in a warm area and be able to keep my head shaved, saving money on haircuts and shampoo, but that’s probably not going to happen.

For the record, male, 18.

Cuts 5 times a year - $70 each = $350

If I get things like highlights or lowlights or color it brings the price way up (maybe another $400/year), but I haven’t had my hair colored in almost a year.

Shampoo and other products - maybe something like $300 a year.

Hair accessories - another $50/year

And I have my hair styled once a year for a special event, usually costs around $150.

So, I’m also hovering somewhere around $1000 a year.

Married, 36. My husband probably spends about half that.

Female, 25.

I have Rapunzel hair. I generally just trim the fuzzy ends off when they split, and it’s slightly wavy down there so nobody notices or cares if I manage to get it straight, so that’s $0 on haircuts per annum.

I have highlights in the front, but they’re blatantly obvious ones that have an “entirely on purpose” look whether they’re down to the scalp or have 2" of roots growing out. I get those done by someone else 3-4 times a year at about $40 per. $80-120 there.

I’m not all that picky about shampoo. At the moment I use that Pantene red boost stuff, but anything in the $5/bottle price range will usually do. I need to use conditioner or I would break the comb every time I tried to get the knots out. I go through a bottle of each in 2-4 weeks, depending on whether I’ve been doing anything strenuous that requires extra showers in a day, so I’d guess that’s an average of $15/month on that – another $180.

I don’t use other hair products. I may possess a bottle of gel, somewhere, but it was left in my care by someone else. I think I once bought a bottle of colored hair spray for Halloween, but that was years ago. I don’t really buy headbands or those toothy clips, because my hair just overruns them and they break, fall out, or otherwise fail, but I do periodically notice that I have lost all of my hair elastics and have to go buy more. I keep bobby pins/roller clips around for putting it up for real if I’m doing something where having 2.5" of braid might be dangerous. I probably spend, oh, $10-15 a year on that.

So at most, I spend somewhere just over $300 on it per year. The money I save as compared to the other people in my peer group who get a thousand haircuts and buy sixteen different kind of hair mousse mostly goes to getting more computer parts.

Twice a week!? Wouldn’t that work out to over $2000 at $20 a cut?

Somewhere around $100

Haircut every few months at the $10 shops: $60
Economy-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner, about $12 a pair: $36

LOL…I meant twice a month!

 I was wondering if the stylists would even be able to cut as small an amount as would grow in half a week.

For last year: cut and color every two-three months, at 42€ a pop, let’s say 200€. Two bottles of “normal hair” shampoo for the whole year (I only need to wash it once a week, most of the year) and a bottle of anti-dandruff shampoo, which I use when I’m under stress because that’s when the white flakes tend to come around. Total less than 250€.

This year I need to find a hairdresser or, alternatively, just stop cutting and coloring.

I get my hair cut every 6-7 weeks so about 8 times per year at about $60-70 per cut. Colour once or twice per year.

I don’t know how much wax/gel/stuff I use, maybe 8 jars or so at $15-20 each. It’s a fairly expensive brand but they last a long time and I tend to buy them when they’re on sale.

I only use normal shampoo, but I have no idea how much I use.

So in total I probably spend $700 per year plus whatever the shampoo cost is.

Straight married male age 33. Looking at the figure above maybe I should hand in my hetero-male membership card though.

Around $8 a year for hair spray.
Around $6 a year for shampoo.

So, about $14 a year. And I look EVERY BIT OF IT!!!

(Seriously, I buy cheap shampoo when it’s on sale for $.89 a bottle, my hairspray is $1.99, and I cut my own hair.)

If you add up everyone in this thread - I think I still spend more that the total.

I am a huge product whore - my bathroom is full of “stuff”, it helps that I am allowed to shop at the wholesalers, but just barely.

Spending money on my hair is pretty much the only indulgence I’m spending money on lately (not a lot of going out to clubs/movies, buying less stuff like clothing/books/DVDs).

I’ve had short hair for the last couple years (not quite a pixie cut, but less than two inches), so it has to be cut every six weeks or so to keep looking good with that style. Currently I’m growing it out a little - hopefully to about chin length by the summertime. Then I’ll likely still go for color every six weeks (I hate noticeable roots), but switch to getting it cut every twelve weeks.

$1006

Hairdresser: $880
Haircut = $40 every six weeks or so, call it 8 times per year
Color (foils) = $60, usually get highlights and/or lowlights with every cut
Tip = $10 - I usually tip about $10, but sometimes I’ll give more (e.g. $30 when I had an appointment just before Christmas)

Hair product: $126
Shampoo and conditioner= $6 per bottle (on sale), bottle of each lasts about four months
Mousse/gel/assorted hair goop = $5 per month (each bottle probably lasts three or four months, but on average it’s probably about $5 per month in total)
Hair clips/headbands/scarves = about $30 per year

$25 or so every couple of months for a trim.
$6 conditioner also every 2 months
$4 shampoo every month
$3 every 4-5 months for gel.
$8 for a random bottle of leave-in conditioner, shiny stuff, or frizz control stuff.
$4 twice a year for hair bands
equals…
…about 275 a year. Not bad considering my hair is my best feature.
