How much MORE coffee is drunk on Monday than on any other day of the week?

This isn’t in GQ simply because I don’t think there’s a factual answer for this one, and it’s not in MPSIMS because it seemed like more an IMHO question.

Spoz asked this question in his blog, and I thought I’d be a good friend and ask it here. (I admit being curious to see what you all come up with)

Last night, I told him that I didn’t have any answers for him regarding the coffee thing. His response was: “DAMN… coz I wuz counting on your abilities to come up with useless facts…” Well, I wouldn’t want to let him down (even marginally)… so I’m asking it now. Þ

Here’s the blog entry for reference purposes:

Note: I’m not a trainspotter, and I don’t live vicariously though the site… it’s just his joking designation for some obsessed people.

I’m not sure I have an answer myself, but I’d assume that the amount of coffee drunk on a Monday has got to exceed the weekender amount. (not sure by how much, though)

I work Tuesday through Saturday, so assuming that the high point of coffee consumption takes place on the first working day of each new week, I must confess that I drink one cup a day at the office, Tuesdays through Fridays.

Saturdays when I am the only one there, and the heat is turned down, I drink three cups a day. Sundays and Mondays are my days off, and I drink four cups of coffee each day spent at home.

Why the incredible disparity? you ask. Easy. Yucky office coffee during the week. One cup a day is certain to be murder on the body, as it is simply vile stuff. Saturdays, I bring my own grounds, because I will freeze without the hot beverage, and a good cup of coffee almost makes up for working alone every Saturday.

And I have always loved a lazy morning with a pot of coffe on the side.

Sorry for blowing your theory.

That’s quite all right, Sinshine. It’s not really my theory anyhow, but Spoz’s. He’ll be pleased to learn that you’ve blown it right out of the water, though. (as long as I don’t use the word “defenestration” on him, that is!)

By the way: Where did you get the second quote in your sig? Someone just told me that on Sunday, only he said it was ketchup and not mustard.
I’d say that good coffee is definitely better than yucky office coffee. So I can definitely understand that.

We have a coffee filter in our office, life is good. On a Monday, much coffee is drunk, but not so much as on a slow Friday afternoon, when we’ve all had enough, and are drinking coffee and having discussions on Shakespeare, love, life and literature.

Did I mention we’re all physicists.

I drink plenty of coffee on Mondays … but I drink just as much on every other day. Doesn’t really matter what it tastes like, so long as it has that all-important caffeine in it.

I should perhaps mention that Spoz drinks a lot of coffee to maybe cancel out the effects of his weeikeneder alcohol abuse. (I’m not so sure it works, myself)

But I would surmise that if there’s more coffee drunk on Mondays than the rest of the week, it’s because you have to get back into “work mode” from “weekender mode.”

well… my loose theory on all this…
and hence why I believe more coffee is drunk on Monday’s than every other day… is simple reasoning…

the start to most people’s work week’s… is a Monday…
the DREADED Monday… Mondayitis…
that horrible abrupt end to the weekend zone out…

from my faded memory of actually having to get up early in the mornings… I remembered… Monday wuz the worst… as if to say to y’self… “WOT??? AGAIN???”

anything that can be done to jolt one’s comatose lull into instant action… or at least, to make the screaming stop… (as is always the way on a monday) is very much welcome…

thus, I assume… more coffee is consumed on a Monday, to jolt us back into action… to recover… to cover up for our skull shattering hangovers from the Saturday night’s previous… etc… etc…

just a thought…
but, I wuz curious how much fact there could be found on this…

I’m in a bad place to have no cites for my sig lines, I know.

I will add them if I find them. But I simply don’t know.

Nah, that’s all right. Just wondering. Perhaps I’ll ask my friend later on.

I actually think I drink less coffee on a Monday, because I get up later and spend the entire morning running behind. Trying to get a cup in before I have to leave is difficult. We haven’t got a coffee pot at work, because I’m the only one there who drinks it, and if I drank a whole pot, I’d probably explode. (I know that, theoretically, I could have the coffee pot at work and not make a full pot or drink coffee all day, but my willpower is kind of poor.)

Sunday is perfect for coffee drinking, though. Spending the morning writing or on the Straight Dope, with a cup of coffee by my side… I wish there were more Sundays in the week, truthfully.
