None for me. My wife and son bring enough equipment to stock a Best Buy. The camera I understand and appreciate. The cell phones are nice sometimes. The computers they spend half the day playing with … we could have saved a lot of money by staying home if they just wanted to read email and play games.
Personally, nothing. Spouse - smartphone and maybe the laptop - he can’t seem to get out of the work mode. For one vacation, we borrowed our daughter’s camera -ours is older and it’s a battery hog. And if we’re driving, the GPS lives in the car anyway, but I always scope out maps before we leave so I have a good idea of where we’re headed.
That’s pretty much it.
Sure, but I’m going on vacation tomorrow. I invited several people to come join me. If they want to find me, they need to call or e-mail me.
This thread reminded me of the one time I brought my tablet to the beach, expecting to be able to read via the Kindle app. Sun glare aside, I had the thing out for maybe a minute before sand started getting everywhere, especially in the seams around the glass. I quickly put it away before it collected half the beach and wondered if anyone else managed to use their tablets/e-readers there or if that was best left for commercials.
I use my kindle at the beach all the time.
I have the first one shown.
ETA: A few of the beaches I’ve read on are accessible by kayak only (tiny islands).
A Ziploc bag works just as well, and is much cheaper.
And typically fails at the worst possible time.
That’s why I specifically look for cameras that take regular batteries. I buy rechargeables and bring my charger, but if I forget the charger I can always buy batteries, no matter where I am. Finding a new camera-specific battery while on vacation would be more of a challenge.
On car trips I bring a flip book of CDs and an MP3 player or iPod with FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, depending which car I’m taking (only one of them allows stuff to be plugged straight in). If we’re flying, my husband usually brings along his portable video game device with all the emulators on it, so he can play games.
I usually bring my cell phone with me too, but I never use the thing, so I don’t know why. I’ve recently acquired a tablet computer, but I haven’t brought it anywhere because I’m scared to lose it or have it stolen.
When on holiday I take a small camera - leave all the rest especially the phone - it is a holiday after all
I use may phone, tablet & laptop every day as well as being around all the stuff in work or at home (sometimes I hate working in IT…) - A holiday is to get away from it all…
Cell phone (32 gig iPhone 4), MP3 player (32 gig iPod Touch). Might seem weird to lug both around, but I have way more music than I can fit on both devices, let alone on just one device. I’d prefer the MP3 player to be a 120 gig Classic, but hey, the Touch was free.
Laptop and external hard drives if I’m staying at a hotel for more than a day or two.
I bring my iPhone, Macbook Air, Kindle (which I don’t have any waterproof case or anything for. . . have I been skirting sadness all this time?!), fancy digital camera, waterproof digital camera (if I’m going somewhere watery), and then all the respective chargers/cords.
Camera, several lenses, GPS for camera, phone, ipad, GPS for car and chargers for all! I also carry a small powerbar because most hotels hide all of their outlets.
I’ve found that carrying my own GPS is much better than renting one. I’m already familiar with how it works and at $15/day it’s worth the hassle to carry it to my destination.
mrAru and I each bring our cellphones, he has an old school film camera, I snap pictures with my phone. When driving, we have the netbook in the front of the car in case we need to use wifi somewhere, and if it is a long vacation we pack our laptops. We use my droid as a GPS, an alarm clock, and we each read ebooks on our phones. We will use the netbook as a juke box in the hotel rooms en route. We don’t tend to log in to check emails on vacation while on the road, if someone needs to get us they text us and we call them back or they can try to call us.
Re: tech at the beach or other locales – Otter Box makes cases specifically designed for those sorts of situations. I have a case for my phone after a near-disaster with dropping it in a parking lot.
Tech on vacation… well, I’m headed out this weekend for a family do, and I’m taking my Kindle, phone, camera, and possibly netbook. Off the grid? What’s that? :o
Leaving Saturday. Packed kindle. Digital camera. One cell phone just in case. Too expensive to use out of U.S. that’s about it. Is sound machine a tech device?

Another vote for Otter Box products. They have an iPod case that is great.
