My answer (on this particular road trip anyway), is way, way too much.
I blame digital cameras, that’s what started it all for me. I have 3 that all take different batteries, so that means 3 different chargers, and of course at least 3 different SD cards. Of course I have to bring my laptop along to download/upload images. And some CDs to listen to and DVDs to watch if I want. A cellphone of course, with another charger. Oh, and don’t forget my iPod Touch 3T and it’s charger. Don’t forget my back-up battery supply, and my mini-powered speaker.And then there’s the satellite radio in my rental SUV…
Yeah, there’s nothing like getting away from it all!
I have just one camera – a DSLR, so I need to bring three or four lenses as well – and I bring a laptop as well, to look at what I’ve taken and save to a hard drive.
Camera, three lenses, flash, lots of SD cards, batteries (no charger unless I’m going to be away for a long time - I can get 1,000 shots per charge), laptop, card reader, iPhone, car charger, and cables for everything.
:smack: otherwise known as the iPod Touch 3g. Oh, and I forgot my fancy-smanchy multi-LED headlamp with all the cool flash settings and my wall wart and all the cables.
My standard kit for work or pleasure:
iPhone, iPod shuffle, quality P&S camera, Kindle Touch, BlackBerry, Traveler guitar, guitar cords, Boss looper pedal, Orange mini practice amp, assorted headphones, and my work computer. Garmin too.
iPhone and netbook. The iPhone doubles as the camera and the music player. It could probably also double as the netbook, but looking at the tiny screen too long gets taxing.
I’m assuming the question refers to additional stuff over the everyday collection?
Since the cellphone and charger are always in the truck, the only extra things are the digital camera. All its accessories are in the same case (sd cards, charger, usb’s), so it’s the same thing I grab for local trips too.
If we’re traveling by RV, I sometimes bring one of the laptops, since it’s easier to change reservations via campground wi-fi if we alter our plans. If we’re renting a plane, I bring a small yoke-mount aviation GPS along. It has real-time weather on the screen and a lot of rental planes don’t include this.
All-in-all, there’s very little increase in tech gear when on vacation. The laptop stays in its case unless needed for mapping or reservation changes (I stay off the web and away from email on vacation… that’s the whole point, imo).
For years, it was the cellphone and charger for sure. For extended trips (more than 5 days) I might add my old pocket PC Jornada. As of March, I added Kindle to the line up.
Ditto. And the Kindle is mostly for airplane reading or if there’s going to be a lot of pool time. I have no desire to use a computer while vacationing (I do plenty enough of that in my mundane everyday life!), and even less desire to lug a laptop everywhere I go.
Gave up on digital cameras a while back, too. I’ve never been a big picture-taker anyway, and the iPhone camera has gotten good enough that it can serve as my one-and-only camera from here on out.
For an overnight or weekend trip, I bring my tablet. For longer trips, I bring along the inductive charger/stand and bluetooth keyboard. That’s it aside from my phone which I’d have anyway. The tablet handles my movie/music/entertainment needs.
My Kindle (Touch) and smart phone are usually enough. Both can use the same charger and the Kindle holds a charge long enough that it’s usually not an issue. I’d bring a digital camera too if I had one worth bringing along.
If it’s likely that I’m going to have to keep myself entertained for a long time, I might also add my 3DS and/or my laptop and a couple DVDs to the bag.
I was laying on a beach in St Martin last February and I finished my beer. There were no more in the ice bucket. My gf offered to walk up to the beach bar to get the bucket refilled.
Instead, I used my phone to find the bar’s FB page. I clicked on their phone number and a few seconds later I was talking to the bartender, who cracked up and came jogging down with a bucket-o-beer.
