Dr. Drew Pinsky (the agressively self promoting doctor to the stars [and a founder of of ‘what addicts need to heal is ratings’ school of therapy]) has authored a new book on narcissism, celebrities, and culture (story& amazon). He gave various celebrities the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a test on which
Average Score- 12-15
Average Celebrity Score- around 18
Narcissist- 20+
You can take the same test here. Unfortunately you can’t compare your results to Ashton and Demi or whoever Dr. Drew got to take the test (more likely Willie Aames and Erin Moran). Feel free to post your results of course.
I love the notion of a psychiatrist who employs a press agent and has close-ups filmed of himself listening compassionately to people in group therapy taking a stance against narcissism.
It notes, “You scored particularly high in superiority, suggesting you feel you are superior to most others”. But apparently I don’t qualify as a narcissist, so maybe my perception of my own awesomeness is in fact accurate and appropriate.
Hey, I’ve worked at this for 25 years. It’s not easy to become a whitewater rafting guide who is EMT certified and good at martial arts with an astounding knowledge of federal and state rules in a specific area who doesn’t even break a sweat when delivering an 8 hour training solo to 160 people. And still works daily to emulate the humility and patience of the Buddha.
My girlfriend recently asked me if I’m as confident (not cocky) as I seem. I quoted Zeppo Marx - “It’s not that I have so much self-esteem, it’s that most people don’t have any.”
You really need to re-evaluate your digs on Dr. Drew. The guy, relative to other TV “doctors”, is a paragon of talent and restraint. The guy worked for Loveline for free and without releasing his real name for almost 20 years to help youths understand sex, drugs and personality disorders. He’s still a practicing doctor and respected authority on addiction.
I think Celebrity Rehab is a better anti-drug PSA than anything Nancy Reagan or Congress has come up with.
