I’m expecting if they kept searching, they might have found signed confessions as well.

Sounds like the “Mastermind” was a victim of existential angst or some kind of late-onset mental illness rather than being an evil mastermind. For one thing, robbing banks doesn’t strike me as a “mastermind” kind of crime.
