Beyond that, his HIV status isn’t any of our business- it’s his, his doctor’s, and anyone he’s slept with, and that’s it. I suspect that’s why it was kept secret for so long- with his long-standing horndog habits, he was an easy target for extortion, until he went public, and now he’s just a lawsuit target. Which while not awesome from his perspective, at least brings the weight of the legal system’s rigor down on his side, in that someone is basically going to have to prove a number of things before they’ll get a favorable judgment in civil court. Merely pointing out that they slept with him post-diagnosis and threatening to spill the beans if he doesn’t pay isn’t going to be effective anymore.
And, I suspect, if he didn’t actually transmit it to anyone, then lawsuits for anguish and suffering are likely to be much less lucrative.
He admits to continuing, present day, to have sex with prostitutes. He admits to having unprotected sex at least twice.
I’m guessing he’s admitting his condition only because he got tired of being blackmailed. The article mentions at least one blackmailer was a prostitute, so it’s something that he opened himself up to through his own behavior.
He’s damn lucky he’s not looking at criminal charges.
Someone in the Cafe thread posted the relevant laws regarding this sort of stuff.
Apparently it is NOT a crime to have sex with someone and not tell them your HIV status. You have to do that with the INTENTION of getting them infected.
I’ll leave it to others to decide how fucked up or not that is.
This. No celebrity should ever have to disclose their medical information. If they choose to so, to increase awareness or fund raise for a charity, fine. Other than that, we shouldn’t know. If there was blackmail, I hope the police are involved.
I’m not saying it’s any of my business mind you, but since I know I have no compunction about calling him an asshole. OTOH if you had asked me what I thought of him before I knew this one additional fact, I would have said the same thing…
Maybe some CA husbands who have found out the hard way that they’ve shared women with him will too.
“I don’t understand. Sure, you’re a hottie and I’m just a successful short guy with a wig & bad hair that’s older than you… but I’ve Only F-cked YOU!!!
How is that fair that I’m now HIV positive…!?”
I caught part of a Dr Drew segment last night. He was discussing this with someone from E! and the Middle Gay Guy from People’s Couch. They said that Charlie admitted that he’d had unprotected sex with two women “who were under his doctor’s care.” What Dr. Drew and Middle Guy said was that this means the women are taking the HIV drugs prophylacticly, so that they have a lower chance of getting the virus from someone with HIV.
In other words, Charlie is paying his doctor to give the drugs to two women who don’t need it, and paying them to take the drugs, so that he can go on having unprotected sex.
All of which means he has “Grossest Celebrity” on lockdown.
I think that’s an accurate statement of the law in California, but I’m not sure I agree that it’s true across the country. For example, in my home state of Virginia, the crime of “Infected Sexual Battery,” (Va Code § 18.2-67.4:1 et seq) provides that it’s a felony to have sex with the intent to transmit your HIV infection to your partner, but it’s also a crime, albeit a misdemeanor, to have sex at all without having previously disclosed the existence of your infection.
Even without the medicines reducing the viral load and adding protection to pre-exposure, I’ve read some charts and articles claiming something like a 4 in 10,000 chance of vaginal transmission. I don’t have the cites, but they are easy to find and I think it’s pretty well known that vaginal sex transmission is a lot less likely than other methods. I am not saying he got it from anal sex with a transexual (which is one rumor, and it has been rumored for years that he played around with transexual porn stars, and male porn stars have alleged that have turned down offers- A male pornstar who performs w/ women, men, and trans and has made several appearances in the media due to the popularity of his blog and association with sports personalities, among others. ), but that the likelihood of him giving it to females through even unprotected vaginal sex is very low. If he gave unprotected anal, the risk would have been much higher. Maybe he did, I don’t know.
The rate of transmission through vaginal intercourse for people in wealthy, industrialized nations is around .04% for men, and .08% for women. By comparison, the risk from unprotected anal sex is .06% for the penetrative partner. (It’s a woping .82% for the receptive partner). Unprotected vaginal sex is considered a high risk for HIV transmission, and is the single most common method of transmission globally, by a wide margin.
I think it’s bullshit. Charlie Sheen has shown so many psycho colours over the years, i wouldn’t put it past him to claim to be HIV Pos just for shits and giggles.
