“Gray” aliens from the Zeta Reticuli star system have been warring against the “Reptilian” aliens from the Sirius system, and have been using earth as a proxy battlefield for centuries. Our government has known about this since 1947 and has tried to maintain a policy of neutrality, however the Reptilians can shape-shift into human form and hide amongst us and have been gaining control of our government for decades. We’ve gotten to the point where the Gray aliens are hostile to us, and have been abducting humans in order to develop human-Gray hybrids to use as soldiers, since they will have the mental powers and telepathy of the Grays but will be habituated to earth’s gravity and atmosphere. A small, select group of the US government knows about this and has been working with both sides - the Grays and the Reptilians - in exchange for technology. We’ve managed to obtain FTL travel technology from these aliens but have not made use of it yet, as the tech is still beyond our means though proven to work.

Some more government conspiracies and how I’d rank them:
Obama being born in Kenya would be about a 7 or 8.
Obama getting gay married on the surface of Mars would be a 10 (mostly because it involves teleportation which is also a 10).
Obama revealing himself to be a Deep Cover Republican who did a shitty/mediocre job and passed a very moderate UHC law just because he wanted to give liberals a bad name would be about a 6.

A secret army base in the desert making a new kind of weapon never before seen, capable of destroying the world?
But they did a darn good job of keeping a secret out there in Los Alamos in the 1940’s.
Serious question:–in all of history, has there every been any secret project that was bigger or more complex than the Manhatten project?
Operation Overlord. Trying to co-ordinate hundreds of thousands of people along with their equipment to invade Occupied Europe without giving the game away to the Nazis or anyone else who wasn’t supposed to know what whas going on.
The diversionary tactics, clandestine operations and behind the scenes stuff involved was just mind-boggling and yet it was still officially a secret right up until the doors on the landing barges went down on those French beaches.
I think if the average American were suddenly confronted with the true results coming out of our family courts they would be completely blown away. An absolute 10.
Protective parents forced to drop their children off for the weekend with known sexual abusers,
Courts granting full custody to wife beaters and crack addicts because the protective parent dared to make allegations which couldn’t be proven in court
Case after case being dragged on until both parents are bankrupted by the process, only to magically become easy to resolve when they run out of money
I read one case where a father was criminally convicted of sexually abusing two of his five children. The Mother was then forced to use her slender resources to take these kids 200 miles to visit their father in prison every other weekend, because “statistics show that fathers who stay involved with their families are less likely to return to prison.”
The local police force immediately bows out of any complaint involving a child and refers it to “Child Protective Services.” Meanwhile CPS is completely underfunded, and can’t even respond to all the children in immediate danger, much less investigate difficult cases.
It’s so utterly appalling that you can’t even discuss it without sounding like a crazy person. And you can’t get cites because the whole thing is protected by strict confidentiality rules.
Impressive and immense yes, but I would put that in a different category. It certainly was no secret that there was going to be an invasion. They had to keep where and when a secret. But its not like they could pretend there was no planned invasion. The very existence of the Manhattan Project had to be a secret. Even the Vice President had no idea. The Manhattan Project was a secret, the actions leading up to Overlord was maskirovka.
I disagree that Overlord was bigger than the Manhattan Project. And from what i’ve read the germans had a lot of evidence that we were planning to land at Normandy but Hitler was absolutely convinced it would be at Calais no matter what he was told. Even after D-Day he was convinced it was just a diversion and the real landing would be taking place at Calais later on.
The scale of the Manhattan project as well as the timeframe of it was much larger and more expensive and involved more people, infrastructure, etc. Including civilians.
On a side note, if Americans knew the truth about drugs and the drug war (many do but the majority are completely brainwashed) it would be a 8 or 9 (10 being reserved for sci-fi basically).
How can you be certain of other peoples reactions? Not everyone shares the same opinons about any subject.
For example, in the case of drugs, I would not be outraged if I found out that drugs are not as harmful as the government claims they are. It would not be shocking to me if the government admitted that law enforcement activities, in general, are very ineffective in preventing their use.
(Since recreational drug use holds no interest for me, I do not have any emotional investment into seeing their legalisation.)
The only thing that would surprise me (on a 4 or 5) is that the U.S. government is “in” on the drug trade as a matter of policy (as opposed to corrupt government employees).
The shocking part would be the admission that the truth has been covered up all this time. How many shooters there were, and whether or not Oswald was one of them, would really just be a minor detail after this.
Take out the Illuminati & Freemasons, and just focus on attendees at the Bildeburg Conferences. They are selected from the political-financial-business-media elites, so they basically do control everything.
Several pivotal Supreme Court decisions were dictated by administrations with blackmail files on the justices accumulated by J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI. A 7 or 8.
Perhaps not actually running it, but I could easily believe that over the years the US federal government has given tacit permission to smuggle drugs into the US to various groups aiding the US’s national security interests.
My pet Kennedy conspiracy theory is, Lee Harvey Oswald initiated and carried out the assassination alone; BUT- this was the end result of an incredibly convoluted quadruple-agent scheme involving the CIA and the KGB, that spiraled out of the spymasters’ control. It was the biggest clusterfuck in US intelligence history, and the secret is that basically the CIA got a sitting president killed through sheer incompetence.
That we have been getting messages from other worlds, but they were in Japanese and we had to break the code to receive them too, before Japan took over the world with their death ray that we destroyed in the Billy Mitchell raid of 1942.
We then went on to develop the atomic bomb and destroy their central receiving message center in Hiroshima. This secret has never been revealed, plus the rumored secret of J Edgar Hoover being gay would be a bomb shell. No wait a minute I saw that on the History channel that can’t be a secret.
Wouldn’t it be a pretty negative discovery to find out the government had been keeping secret the existence of sentient alien life, interstellar travel, and whatever technological discoveries they found on the aliens’ spacecraft?
One thing about an alien spacecraft : even if you couldn’t make the tech work again, and even if some of the features worked “magically” by no theory known to man (a common trope of science fiction that covers this), just knowing it was possible is an earth shattering discovery.
If you just knew the craft could do something impossible, like travel ftl or hover on antigravity or something else completely unknown as even a possibility to modern science, that would be a truly invaluable piece of information. We’d know to throw out our current knowledge of physics and investigate theories that allow for these things.
Even if the alien spacecraft only used principles known to modern science, but did things that were extremely impressive to our current knowledge (such as self-repair using nanotechnology, or nanotechnological systems in general), that would again be critical information. We’d know to flood money into the research to duplicate these capabilities, knowing 100% that it was possible.
