I have a Compaq Deskpro 4000 console. I wanted to use the CD cleaner for our CD music player in the console, so I popped it in and used the Run command on the pop-up Start menu. It even displayed a contents box on the screen, but the console wouldn’t run the disk’s programs (which emit voice instructions, and music, on the CD music player); a dialog box appeared saying the Winamp file (which is in a subsidiary folder in C:\WINDOWS) could not be found.
Am I using the wrong kind of Compact Disk Drive cleaner here, or have I just pushed the wrong keys? Routine cleaning, anyway, right now…
Can you play regular music CDs on this system?
Just recently, my CD-ROM stopped reading CDs most of the time. It was difficult to diagnose, because sometimes it worked, but usually it didn’t.
I decided to give my (audio) CD cleaner a try. It is a disk with little “pads” or “brushes” underneath the disk, and walks you through the process of using it with verbal commands, much like the tool you describe.
Luckily, perhaps, my CD-ROM did read the CD cleaner disk, and I was able to complete the process. Haven’t had any problems since. You should be able to do the same.
scr4’s question is valid, since the referenced Winamp file should have nothing to do with the CD-ROM, but would/could apply to playing other audio CDs.
Yes, I can play music CDs on the system, but I don’t often, since I have a separate CD player, in a big boom box. We have another machine that plays CDs and cassettes, and radio, all of which my boom box does too. I couldn’t see the connection between Winamp and a CD cleaner.
Please read Sam’s CDROM repair brief. Section 4.3 should be of note.
If you want to actually clean your CDROM, read all of section 5 and section 7.2.
As for your problem, since you have used a “lens cleaning disc”, there is no telling whether it is working correctly or not with the info provided.
Is it a wet cleaner or a dry cleaner or both? Wet is for oil like fingerprints, dry for dust.
It’s dry. I’m leery about putting any kind of liquid into any part of the computer hardware.
I used to just open the drive & clean it with some alcohol…but they use tiny screws on them that take some time to get off to get that lid off.
Also, let me state that the drive is NOT in the computer when i do that
