How to get swimming goggles to fit correctly?

I used to swim a lot.

Now I’ve gone back to the pool, and for some reason, can’t get goggles that don’t leak. I never had this problem when I was young.

The salesgirl I spoke to in a sports store claimed that if they would stick to my face without putting the headband round my head, they would be pretty much leakproof.

However, Russian salespeople are known for making claims which have very little to do with the truth. None of the goggles I tried would stick.

I’ve now tried pairs from three different manufacturers, and all of them are letting in water.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

Is there an official method for picking the correct goggles for you? If so, what is it? And how should I adjust them so that they don’t leak?

What has worked for me is pretty much what your salesgirl told you. You push them into your eye socket, sort of, creating suction. If you can do that and they stick there (just for seconds), then you have a good seal that will keep the water out.

I had to try on a lot of pairs and spend about $18. Same for my kid. We can’t really switch to each other’s goggles, either (although he has borrowed mine).

Yeah, the salesgirl was on the level, but might not have had a big enough selection to find you the right goggle.

I’ve got kind of deep-set eyes, so the traditional foam seal on goggles never worked well for me. I did much better with Speedo’s “Sprint II” goggles, which had a sticky rubberized seal; alas, they’re no longer sold AFAICT.

So I’ve switched to their Hydrospex or Sengar styles.

Basically, I would suggest that instead of going to a generic sports store, that you go to a swimming supply store. They’ll have a much larger selection of goggles (particularly in the off-seasons).
