I just spent a few minutes of my life responding to a thread, and when I checked back for a response from the guy who started it, I see he has been banned.
Is there a way we can see who has been banned and (optionally) why? Perhaps a thread “Banned user list” thread where Tuba or somone posts “User FOOBAR has been banned because it was discovered it was a sock puppet for David B”. Or, if that is too sensitive, just “FOOBAR: RIP”.
Just curious if I’m missing something somewhere - does such a thread exist?
We do not plan to post a list of banned users. We feel this would create more problems than it would solve. As you can see, however, all posts from banned users are prominently branded with the word BANNED. We regret that you wasted time on someone who was already on the way out, but these things happen.
Due to the sharp increase in traffic on the SDMB and the consequent slow service, our tolerance for problem posters has greatly diminished. We will continue to post warnings to veteran users who violate our rules (although we have had few problems with experienced people lately). New users who make themselves obnoxious, on the other hand, are subject to banning without warning.
As a reminder, we allow one screen name per user. If we find multiple screen names having the same IP number (same Internet connection), we will presume this rule is being violated and ban all the names immediately. We recognize that occasionally there may be an innocent explanation, e.g., several family members using the same computer. If so e-mail us and we will consider reinstatement. Please understand that this is at our sole discretion. Note that we don’t even begin to look at IP numbers until people act like jerks, so this will have zero impact on most of you. IT ONLY AFFECTS PEOPLE WHO VIOLATE FORUM RULES. If we think you are going to be a pain in the neck you are not going to get back in. We are at the limit of our resources here and we don’t have bandwidth to waste on jerks.
Speaking of resources, we are currently upgrading the SDMB hardware. See separate post.
WOO-HOO!!! Cat! GREAT to see you!
your humble TubaDiva
Congratulations, CatBiker, you are the poster who has been registered the longest and is still active, excluding those affiliated with the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board, the Chicago Reader, or the SDMB. Of course just last night I was pointing out that the honor should go to Opal, as you didn’t seem to have posted since February.
Thanks, Ed! I totally understand bandwidth issues, and that a list of banned folks would possibly cause problems.
Keep on keepin’ on.
Thanks, Ed; You and all others who help to run this madhouse deserve every kudo we can give. If you’re ever in Boise, look me up; I’ll treat you to lunch!
