How to make Jagermeister palatable?

I’m going to the coast this weekend and one of my friends really likes Jagermeister. Although I love licorice, I dislike Jager, but I’m going to be social and join her in enjoying a liqueur she enjoys. That said, I think she might enjoy experimenting with it, so I thought I might bring a couple of mixers. I found a recipe for Jager and tonic; I like tonic so I thought I’d give that a go. It should at least eliminate the syrupy mouthfeel. I also found a lemon elderflower sparking water at TJ’s which I’ve found mixed with gin enjoyable. Would lemon flavor compliment licorice? How about lime or orange? I also bought some blood oranges from TJs. Can you tell I like citrus? Although it may not be the way to go.

What I don’t want to do is spend a bunch of money on other spirits or liqueurs. This isn’t intended to be a boozy weekend, just a relaxed one with some booze. I think.

I used to drink Jagerbombs-- Jagermeister & Beer.

Jager and Red Bull is the only thing that will work. Those others you mentioned sound like puke city (no offense).

IME, the more you drink, the more palatable it becomes.

Yep. The only thing I ever found to work was more Jaeger. Once you can’t taste it anymore it’s not bad.

Take the shot glass in your hand. Point behind your friend and shout “Look! An alien attack craft!” When she turns to look, pour the shot onto a potted plant you don’t like. Put the glass to your mouth like you drank the vile stuff. Smile when your friend turns back around.

Jagerbombs sound like a drink you drink to get drunk. Not my intention; I’m aiming for pleasantly buzzed. Besides why would I ruin good beer by sullying it with Jager?

I’ve seen the Red Bull recipe, but what if you don’t like Red Bull to begin with? And isn’t that an energy drink? We’re not going clubbing, we’re gonna be relaxing at a campground after a day of hiking and beach walking. Red Bull does not sound conducive to relaxation.

Hah! I can attest to this. The funny part is that my other friend loves Redds Wicked hard ale, which she’s bringing and is responsible for some previous campground drunken hijinks. I wasn’t going to bring drinks since I’m bringing the food, but I may have to rethink that. I may have a different idea than my friends do for recreational drinking for this weekend.

I tend to like refreshing, citrusy mixed drinks; not too sweet, not too heavy. I’m on a gin kick these days. I do enjoy herbal liqueurs, but usually in some sort of cocktail.

She just sips Jager as a relaxing drink?

I am not a big fan of jagermeister either, but there are lots of recipes for cocktails involving it and citrus fruits on the internet, so it must not be terrible? I’m kind of intrigued by the mastermix one.

Here’s a recipe that uses soda and orange bitters. I don’t have bitters, though. Maybe I should get some.

I don’t know. It was the first I’ve heard of it when we started planning the weekend. Her husband is a big bourbon guy and last time I was at their house we shared a bottle while she was drinking something else. I can’t remember what, though. Doesn’t matter. She’s a very good friend and I am so looking forward to this small digression from the daily grind that I feel particularly good-natured about the whole thing. I’ll happily drink Jager with her, but I’m going to doctor it up somehow.

Oh, that’s cool. I wasn’t belittling her for doing that. I’ve just never seen it drank (drunk?) that way before.

Maybe chewing on those Dutch “DZ” licorice candies first would make the drink seem refreshing by comparison.

Jager, grapefruit juice and tonic or seltzer sounds like the way to go, IMO.

Jagermeister was always supposed to be an after dinner drink; a digestif, not a shot to be downed by frat boys. Itn that capacity it works quite well. I would highly recommend you take the plunge into trying bitters with cocktails, they really can make a nice drink amazing!

You could try one of the other varieties of Jager as well. They all have that licorice taste but I quite like Spice; big notes of vanilla and cinnamon.

Also, some drink ideas: Jägermeister

Serve brake fluid first, then switch to Jag. The massive improvement in taste will make it enjoyable.

Dilute the Jag 1000:1 with something that tastes good.

I’ve told this story before and here it is, again: went into a liquor store. Asked the young girl there what did Jager taste like. She said, ‘it’s like liquorice. It’s terrible. You won’t like it.’ I said, ‘Well, I’ve heard it’s what all the cool kids drink now…’ and she said, ‘I tell you, it is awful. You won’t like it.’ I said, ‘but…’ and she fixed me with a glare: ‘trust me. You. Won’t LIKE it!’…So I bought some Frangelico and a grapefruit flavor vodka, and was on my way, Jagermeister-free.

The only way to make Jeager palatable is to not drink it. Or smell it. Or see it. Just get yourself a tiny bottle of something you DO like and let her torture her insides her way.

I drink it straight as a digestif. I think it’s quite good. I can’t imagine mixing it with anything.

Yea, just buy some gin and mix your own drinks. Tell her you don’t like it, it hurts your teeth, you had a bad experience with it, or whatever. Nobody wants you to drink something you don’t like. I would never force my drinks on my guests. BYOB is common practice around here.
