Grrrrrrrrrrr…
The Firefox icon has vanished from the taskbar at the bottom of my screen and I can’t figure out how the heck to get it back there. No, I haven’t downloaded and/or installed any new programs, or changed my default browser back to IE, or done anything at all that would explain its disappearance. I left my beast running with the icon in its usual place, came back a few hours later, and found the present situation.
Where there once was one Firefox shortcut on the desktop itself there are now two. I’m assuming that the second one has wandered there from the taskbar, but I can’t drag-and-drop it back into place. I’ve tried exploring the Properties part of the Firefox icon’s right-click menu – no help. I’ve checked the options available with the Start button – nada. I’ve restarted the computer – nope.
I recall being told, several years ago, how to get an icon into the taskbar, but of course have forgotten how – and anyway, that system was Windows 98, and I’m now running xP Professional.
Can anyone help me?
Make a shortcut to the executable on your desktop, then drag and drop it into the taskbar.
Dangit. Upon re-reading just noticed that you are unable to do this.
Sorry.
Right click on the desktop icon, select Send To, then select Quick Launch.
Unfortunately, there is no choice of Quick Launch in the right-click Send To menu.

Right-click on the taskbar and uncheck Lock the Taskbar if it is checked.
Also right-click the taskbar, go to Toolbars and verify that Quick Launch is checked.
You should then be able to re-size the Quick Launch area and drag the Firefox shortcut onto it.
I did some more rummaging around in Start and found Set Program Access and Defaults. In Custom Configuration I changed the selection from “Use current Web browser” to “Mozilla Firefox” and hit “Okay”, whereupon a Firefox icon appeared in the taskbar – but hidden behind those weeny darts indicating click us to expand the visible icons.
So now I can launch Firefox from the taskbar with one extra click, to expand the pane of visible icons. Sigh. Good enough, I suppose.
WOOT!!! Ah-HAAA!!!!!!!
There were three icons visible in the lower left: iTunes, IE, and some Jukebox thingie that I never use. I deleted the Jukebox, and one of the hidden icons appeared. Don't use it, have the shortcut on the Desktop if I need it, so I deleted that. Voila! Another of the hidden icons appeared. Deleted. Rinse and repeat till the Firefox icon showed up. :D
Now it will be interesting to see if this finagling survives the next restart. But so far so good.
On preview: Thanks, **Number**! If my hack-a-fix goes kablooie, I will apply your fix.
