Trader Joe’s has dried, unsulphured Blenheim apricots. Why didn’t I know this? It’s like finding part of my childhood for sale. My grandfather had an apricot orchard and dried most of his crop. People drove for hundreds of miles for his apricots and my grandmother spent the summer after he died turning away carloads of people. Now I can taste them again! They’ve obviously sorted the apricots for looks, though, because the very best ones, i.e. the black ones, are missing. But still, what’s is there is very good.
The yarn I’m working with now is so nice. It’s Romney wool, so it’s not soft, but it’s so well-behaved. I can’t wait to see the finished project.
Thanks Dots & Mama Tigs I am soooooo excited for him to be here and yet at the same time I am worried that we will kill each other being together all the time. We have only ever done the long distance thing
But still there will be much appreciating next weekend when he gets here!
Lunch was left over Papa Murphys pizza from last night - it was the yum.
Off to chop onions and mushrooms and slice tomatoes and slice & season veggies for grilling!
Well, that’s always a possibility. Seriously, it’ll take some getting used to. It’ll be the little things that are the hardest, too. Like Papa Tigs and I had to adjust to wildly varying sleep habits – he’s a 4-5 hours a night person whereas I’m totally a 9 hours a night gal and have been all my life. And he likes hard, upright chairs to sit in to watch TV, whereas I love soft, squishy recliners. But you’ll figure it out eventually. Or kill each other in the process. But then you’ll find the True Test and it’ll all be resolved. In our case, it was when we managed to lay a new laminate wood floor in the entire downstairs of our New Orleans house together and not commit murder – after that we knew we were good for the long haul.
I forgot to tell the tale of my being a BAD girl in the grocery store the other day. I got into the 12-items-or-less line with my three things, and looked at the cart of the woman in front of me which was half full. But I took a note from what I’ve seen others here on the Dope do: I started clearly eying her cart while counting the number items under my breath, just softly enough that she couldn’t accuse me of talking to her. When I hit 23, she started getting very embarrassed, and a moment later made some flimsy excuse and moved to another line. The elderly lady behind me (with her 4 item) was very impressed. Evil triumphs yet again!
Those are for lookin’ not lolin’. And some of them contain boobs.
I am now decidedly Infected. I knew riding around in a car for an hour with Complicated Roommate was going to bite me in the end. (I got lost trying to find the clinic. ) I’m now coughing occasionally and starting to get achy. If I end up with bronchitis and the flu like he has, I am going to be Very Upset.
Persepolis is not playing anywhere near me. Godammit. Another night at home–I’m sick of my own company. Grrrr. Don’t feel like a teenage comedy about pregnancy etc, so no Juno for me tonight.
(Beebs) even if you don’t want it. It can be awful to see a nefarious plot unwind before your eyes.
EMS congrats on ending your long distance relationship. Hawkeyeop and I had a long distance relationship for almost four years before I moved to Boston. It is an interesting dynamic switch–being together all the time from almost never seeing each other. I’m sure you’ll do well with it.
We are back from our Saturday trek. We were going to go to Trader Joe’s except when I got outside and felt how damp and chilly it was, I decided, while waiting for the bus, that if the next one came going in the direction of the Whole Foods, that was where we were going. Well it was and we did. So not as satisfying as Trader Joe’s, unfortunately, but I did get plenty of Greek yogurt, I got some fresh fruit and some chocolate croissants but no carrot muffins or lemon-ginger scones. I did get one blueberry and one cranberry/orange scone though. Then we stopped at Safeway to complete the grocery shopping. LOL Safeway wasn’t too bad, I guess the time to shop is Saturday at 5:30 pm!

May watch some of the 31 Days of Oscar on TCM tonight - they’ve been showing some really great ones! Caught “The Man who Knew Too Much” earlier today, with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day - the one where she sings Que Sera Sera–that was good!
I saw that over Christmas with my dad. He told me that was one of two movies that gave him nightmares as a child–he didn’t know about kidnapping before then (does math He was about nine or ten when it came out). I loved the fight scene in the taxidermist’s shop the best.
Everything ready for tonight. Goodies are as follows:
Chips and crab/spinach dip
Home made burgers - choice of cheese, mushrooms, avocado, fried onions
grilled eggplant/zuccini/yellow squash
roasted spareguts
sallit
rosted red potatos w/rosemary
Desert??? brought by someone

I wasted an entire day . . . again. But I provided a good 45 minutes of aerobic play to Smokey with a bunch of feathers on a stick. Next time, I’ll bring the vid-cam (not for the whole 45, but for at least 3 or 4)
I watched Dreamgirls (for the umpteenth time) and followed it with The Wiz. Interesting pairing of films, no?
I went to the orientation for shelter volunteers today. It sounds like it’s going to be great; they’re asking for a minimum of two hours a week for the particular program I’m interested in (called Pet Pals: you get paired up with an individual critter and get to know them and teach them stuff they need to know, as in some basic obedience and socialization for dogs and socialization and such for kittehs) and I’ve easily got more time than that available. This shelter seems to kick ass in all sorts of ways. How many shelter dogs get taken out on lengthy hikes in the mountains, may I ask? This area is the dog-craziest I have ever seen, and seeing as I do love the doggies, I’m happy to see it.
That being said, they have a much harder time finding people who will work with the kittehs which is why that’s what I’m going to do (though I will be more than happy to greet the pups while I’m there!). I can always get a dog fix at the grooming shop, after all, but if I can manage to convince a shy cat to be more social and therefore find a home I will be thrilled. I grew up with cats, cats who don’t like people have liked me, and I love the idea of getting to go hang around with them and become their friend. One of the shyest is unfortunately down with a cold at the moment, but I’m thinking once she’s over that I want to make friends with her; she’s a gorgeous blue-point Siamese and therefore ought to be Queen of the World by birthright! And another who’s sick, a big orange guy who is called (of course) Garfield, told me very clearly and loudly that he wants me to fuss over him. I will be more than happy to once he’s not so contagious and all of that stuff.
I feel really good about this. I’m going to be able to help kitties find homes, and the moment I am able to provide one myself, I will be happy to adopt somebody. Right now I simply can’t, which is quite possibly a good thing because I will have time to get past the initial “I want to take them all home!” knowing I can’t.
And we’re going to hit kitten season before too much longer. The cute will quite possibly kill me when that arrives. I hope I can learn about caring for them, because all I know about very young kittens is that they are insanely cute.
I will have to check about pics, but I promise you that I will provide pics if I allowed to! Itty bitty kitty babies are soooooooooooooooooooo cute! And the same goes for puppies! An d if for some reason a Doper is here looking for a critter friend I will be more than happy to help…though I think I’m the only one around here.
I love itty bitty babies, but I saw a couple of dozen (maybe more, but I wasn’t really counting) adult kitties that need homes today, and some of them are undoubtedly going to be there for awhile. {preaching mode} Many animals end in in shelters through no real faulf of their own, give them a chance! {/end preaching mode}
Otherwise, I think it’s time for me to crawl into bed. I have no plans at all for tomorrow. My life is so exciting - not! But right now, it’s good. You people have no idea how hard it is to resist a kitty who looks a lot like MT’s Emily who is insisting I must hold and pet her…of course I held and petted her, but I couldn’t take her home!
I moved to Massachusetts from Illinois about three years ago and have since lived in apt. buildings that don’t allow pets. That’s one of the things I miss about IL…even if I didn’t have a pet of my own, lots of other people did and I could go visit them and play. But, no one I know here has doggies or kittehs.
