How to transfer tracks from an iPod?

A friend is loaning me his iPod. Does anyone know how to transfer tracks from the iPod to my Mac? The iPod turns up in iTunes, but all the tunes are greyed out, and I can’t play them or anything, let alone copy them. There’s a padlock symbol at the bottom of the window, BTW.

I answered it myself - under ‘Preferences’ change settings to “manual”.

Actually what you did SHOULDN’T work, and I’d be surprised if it did… the manual setting keep it from synching from the Mac to your iPod automatically. In fact, the ipod is designed to NOT let you xfer files from it to a comp, to help combat music pirating.
