How To Turn Off AVG 10.0 Resident Shield?

Hey guys.

Just downloaded and installed the new AVG Antivirus program and it’s being difficult. I want various features turned off but they have no discipline and are not listening to their superior.

I want the link scanner, resident shield, and e-mail scanner turned off, but according to my task manager, the resident shield process is still running.

Also, when I open that specifically in the AVG user interface, it gives me a running count by second how long resident shield has been running. Isn’t that the definition of still being on?

So basically, WTF?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, ending the processes in task manager has them just pop back up less than five seconds later and running AVG as an administrator (which this user already is anyways) doesn’t change anything.

go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs, and click Uninstall.

seriously, I quit using AVG when it became crap. I used to use Avast but that became nagware, so now I just use MSE.

Hm, I find your ideas intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

What are the pros of MSE? Also, anyone know anything about Avira? A friend suggested it to me but didn’t tell me any specific reason why it’s supposedly good.

Has AVG jumped the shark?

In 9.x, it’s: Tools > Advanced Settings > Resident Shield > Uncheck Enable Resident Shield

Has that been changed?

No it’s still the same and I’ve already done that. But Task Manager says the process is still there (and even restarts itself if I end it) and the running time log of how long the shield has been active keeps on ticking away as though it’s still doing its thing, not even acknowledging that I’ve turned it off.

I was just prompted to upgrade to AVG Free 11 last night, for what it’s worth. You might want to try upgrading instead of fighting with what’s now the “old” version.

I only use AVG on that machine because my XP isn’t Genuine. Otherwise, I am a supporter and user of MSE.

MSE seems to be far less annoying, less intrusive, and less of a drag on the system.

Are you sure you’re not confused? Version 10 is also apparently being called AVG 2011. I saw nothing on the AVG website to suggest they’re on version 11.

All you need to do is go to the AVG main screen, chose "tools’>“Advanced”>Resident Shield and unclick the enable box. It’s really all that simple.

Could very well be confused - my apologies.

I did a spit take too, because it’s bugging me for 2011, and I’m pretty sure I had the newest a week ago. The previous version was 9.0. Microsoft does the same, with Visual Studio 2005 being version 8, and 2009 is v. 9. Thankfully 2010 is version 10.

Let me guess, you didn’t read any of my posts in this thread?

Maybe. I fixed three computers last week that had problems after installing AVG 2011. After rebooting to the dektop, everything froze. Nothing would run from shortcuts or menus, and Task Manager didn’t work.

I ran the AVG 2011 Removal Tool, which corrected the problem, then installed MS Security Essentials.

Not sure what causes the problem, I have also seen several computers that upgraded to AVG 2011 with no problems.

I just gave up on AVG last night.

You CAN turn off the resident shield but it’s hard to. Obviously they want to make it nearly impossible so that a virus can’t simply turn it off.

When I upgraded to Free AVG 2011 the darn thing turned off my Windows Security Center. AVG says it’s not that, but when I unistalled Free AVG 2011, the Security Center is fully functional again.

So I don’t know what’s going on but I will use MS Security Essentials, and then once every other month I’ll put AVG back on and scan or something in case MSSE misses something

I did read all the posts. I disabled the resident shield in my version and it is not working. AVG shows the message “Your system is not protected.” The process is still up and ready to run at a click’s notice. AVG does have some confusing and unnecessary restrictions. I may switch to Avira myself.
