Hubster is in ICU (Update: Now Home and Recuperating)

@Sylvanz , not to cause you any more consternation, but are you sure it’s safe for him to be home, so soon? Safe for him, of course…but you as well.

How are you gonna deal with him after an actual PT session? Those first few are gonna be rough.
Maybe your son can arrange his schedule to be around those days.

Yeesh, you’d think that a therapy place dealing with frail patients would have closer, easier access than to make the patients try to navigate a parking lot and a long hallway.

Personally, I would have liked him to stay another week or two, but they decided he was ready. Frankly, he was better there, but has lost conditioning since home. No room to move much, and Michigan weather, up till today, has not been conducive to going outside.
Regardless, he’s home and we’ll deal. Our son’s job has just started back up as his place changed hands and had a lot of legal, and structural issues to work through. They should reopen in a couple of weeks and are training. He wants to be part of management/leadership so I don’t want him to ask for allowances just yet. I can call my daughter for help at about any time as she’s not working now. So this is where we are. Shrug.

I know. Right? Seems weird to me too.

So now he has about 50/50 blood to urine in his catheter bag. Off to the ER we go again. No fever or pain, just nasty looking mostly red urine. Sigh. We had to cancel his feeding tube exchange.

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope this is easily treated.

Seconding that.

Oh. I’m so sorry.

Peeing blood is scary.

Let us know how he’s doing.

BTDT w blood in urine.

IME it takes rather little blood to create very scary looking urine. Of course the right answer is zero blood, but I’ll counsel some caution / optimism here. This may be relatively minor and readily addressable. I vote for that outcome for you both.

Best of luck and big hugs to all.

Thanks everyone. I guess there is more going on than just the blood. In fact er didn’t seem all that concerned. They switched out the cath and were discussing irrigating his bladder. They sent him for a CT scan and were concerned that his heart rate was bouncing up and down, and he has fluid surrounding his heart. So off to the 45 min. away hospital again. They ended up not irrigating leaving that to the urologist at the bigger hospital to determine. The PA on duty suspects atrial fibrilation. The fluid around his heart, no hypothesies regarding that yet. He will see a cardiologist in the morning. Sooo, here we go again. At least he was present and in his own mind this time.

And another “voice” adding their hopes and support to you and yours @Sylvanz.

Thanks for update, and good luck.

@Sylvanz… Nuts. I’m sorry to hear this news. May his continuing recovery journey smooth out soon. My best to you and Hubby.

Thanks everyone. It’s just so frustrating. On the plus side I got a night of uninterrupted sleep which was nice.

The down side of him being cognizant this time is that he’s chafing at being kept, “bare ass” in a hospital gown. They don’t put briefs on unless they’re up and moving around and right now they’re keeping him in bed. He is NOT happy about it to say the least.

Hoping things go well. About the bareness, I’ve always had good luck with getting a second hospital ‘gown’ and putting it on backwards over the first one. Your bits are as available to doctors, but there’s no breeze on your backside.

Soooo, he is cranky and wants to come home. He’s on Heprin now and when he does come home will be on Eliquis. He is finishing the antibiotic they put him on for the UTI. There are no results on what caused the Pericardial Effusion (I.e. fluid build up around his heart). I guess because that caused atrial fibrilation until they drew it off, and he had a mild stroke in 2008, and a blood clot in his leg several years ago, they want him on a blood thinner. Seems fair. He hates the food, though really it isn’t all that bad, and they’re letting him have chopped and moist. Should be a good time when he does get home.

I know it’s mostly in my head, but in my many arguments with my father about his health, I always find it more comfortable and hopefully when he’s cranky and complaining. It’s when he’s exhausted and compliant, my worries go up to 11. So, I’ll apply my personal guidelines and hope you get your cranky one home much improved and ready for whatever favorite foods his circumstances allow!

I’m wishing you the best, I’m sorry, I just saw this.

He is home now, and sleeps a lot. I’ve stopped ot and pt for a couple of weeks to get him through the appointments he’s got coming up. We will get his skinny hiney outside walking when the weather gets better. Right now I’m trying to put some weight back on him. He’s down to 129 and looks like a skeleton. I’ve snuck more of his formula into his tube. He’ll tell me not to and he’s too full if I don’t sneak it in. He really can’t do food by mouth very well as he gets “full” after less than half. He says he’s sick of mashed potatos. Not imaginable to me. So he will get at least 4 cartons a day, and I’m gonna’ try to get it to 5 eventually. I think he will get more energy if he has a little fat on him.

Thanks everyone for your concern and support. It really means a lot to me to be able to get this stuff out.

Yay! For home, and best wishes for improvement.

Strength and a dose of serenity to you as you make difficult or daily decisions.
