Hulk fans, how faithful was the film?

To the comic book original that is. I never really liked Judge Dredd the film as much as the weekly strip in 2000AD because to me it just didn’t feel close to the ambience and feel (and had one or two howlers of errors IIRC)
The only prior experience of the Hulk I had was the TV series, so how did the film feel to fans of the original?

The original what? TV series or comics? They both had different premises.

I liked it.

And Peter David (Hulk author for 12 years) liked it, so it’s good enough for me.

It wasn’t terribly faithful, however, that doesn’t mean it was bad. Originally Banner worked for the Governemnt developing a Gamma bomb (this was the 60’s after all) and when he ran out to rescue poor Rick Jones who had wandered onto the test field, he was caught in an explosion that his duplicitous assistant allowed to happen by not stopping the count down. This is what changed him into the hulk. Hulk was not completely inarticulate, and the changes origianlly seemed to flow with the cycle of light and dark. Hulk was brutish, but not mindless. He spoke in that rough tough-guy talk that Stan Lee tended to imbue his more phisical heroes with.

No father, no nanites, no gene manipulation, no connection between the families or Banner and Ross prior to Banner coming to the base.

However, while being a bit slow, I liked the movie. I thought it was a good take on the concept, plus, I’m hoping that like X2 now that all the annoying exposition is out of the way they can tell a better story in the next film.

I especially liked the CGI Hulk (Loved it when he became even more angry and grew larger) but thought he did look a little too plastic at times.

So, I thought it was a good story adequately, if not greatly told.

I thought the original (ie comic book) version went along the lines that ddgryphon described. Was the Hulk meant to be able to jump that high in the comics? It just looked plain silly to me.

The most accurate film version was the original cartoon, in that it consisted solely of frames from the comics, with the only real animation coming from lip movements.

I kid you not.

But in the early 90’s it was revealed the Hulk’s father was indeed abusive, and that abuse did tie into the Hulk persona. But the movie was the first we saw of nano-tecnology, and th fact that Bruce was born with the Hulk in him already. It’s a significant departure. However, the comics were never all that concerned with being faithful to previous origin stories…
