Hurricane Matthew Check-In Thread

That is a real thing. Waffle House closings are one rough proxy that FEMA uses to evaluate the severity of a natural disaster.

It doesn’t look pretty. Even the areas that are already dry (SW Cuba) look like they were bombarded. I’ve been through some of these suckers, and it is scary. the sound alone will drive anyone mad. I can’t not imagine what it must feel like in one of those shanty towns.

Thank goodness for concrete structures.

Fo not mess with Hurakan, Taino god of storms. Dude is quite short-tempered.

beautiful! thanks for sharing that link

[East Orlando] Just waking up. Looks just like a windy rainy day outside. If it was worse overnight, I slept through it.

Wow! That is great! Thank you!

You’re welcome. A bit of good news is that if the current forecast holds, the hurricane eye will just miss the Florida coastal cities, but it can hit Charleston in SC.

The bad news is that the slow pace of the storm means that lots if flooding and wind damage are taking place.

West coast of Florida—rain but no wind to speak of. If it weren’t for news reports I wouldn’t have known a hurricane was happening. Hope everyone on east coast and inland made out okay.

Same here. Just overcast and windy. Only a little rain.

South Lake County checking in…we had lots of squally rain last night, but the wind is what’s kicking up this morning.

We haven’t lost power, although my folks in West Volusia have lost internet and cable.

We had it worse during Charley…we lost power for about 18 hours then. I count myself lucky…some of my friends and co-workers lost power for more than a week during that storm.

It was rather nice, snuggling in bed with Ivylad this morning, listening to the gusts and the rain. We’re sitting out in our screened in patio. The wind is rippling the screens. We heard a loud metal banging from the yard to the back of us, but with the trees and bushes we couldn’t see if the people living behind us lost a roof shed or something.

I made banana bread with chocolate chips in it last night and uploaded a couple of storm videos to Facebook. I’m on the SDMB list so if you want to send me a friend request just let me know what your user name is. I don’t friend people if I don’t know how I know them.

Glad to hear everyone is safe so far!

Nephew checked in from Disney. He reports Disney Resort staff are playing games with the guests to entertain them. All is ok there.

All good at Seaworld.

I, too, slept right though it. Windy and rainy now as Ms. Cups and I enjoy a 3-day weekend.

Getting the first rain and a little breeze about 50 miles due west of Savannah. First responders have pulled back to the mainland from all of the barrier islands, and the first tornado warning of this weather event has just been issued.

The wedding has turned into a small potluck affair, so I’ve made Texas caviar - it’s best after a day in the fridge, anyway, and will be fine even if we lose power tonight.

And my husband just braved the line at the newly-opened Krispy Kreme to bring home doughnuts and coffee. And it was one heck of a line - our town is full of evacuees - all of the counties to our east are under evacuation, and every hotel, motel, campground, and state park in the area is full. All of the big box stores east of us are also closed, so Walmart, Kmart, Lowe’s, and the grocery stores are mobbed, along with gas stations and restaurants. Fortunately, the university closed yesterday, and probably 1/4 of students left town. I expect we’ll be a boomtown for several more days, especially because we’re accessible by 3 major highways, and should be able to restock supplies except during the height of the storm tonight.

My daughter in Orlando (near the UCF campus) displayed her psychic abilities by calling this morning about 2 minutes after I thought I should text her. At the time, they had power and were just getting some rain and wind. She’s posted in FB a few times, but for the most part, I think she’s enjoying her day off.

Power has been out since 7am, booooored.

The wind seems to be dying down. We have a few downed branches, not too bad. We never lost power. GA and SC and NC Dopers, stay safe…hopefully Florida took a big bite out of Matthew for you.

Hampton Roads, Virginia, checking in. No bad weather to report. Storm’s not expected to hit us, but we’re keeping an eye on it nevertheless.

Tampa FL here, it’s not even rained that much… just some wind.
Grateful everyone is ok

Heavy rains and gusty winds moving into inland Georgia, and coastal areas are flooding badly. High tide is around 1am. It’s going to be ugly when combined with the increased storm surge. The state police are staged at the local university, and electric company repair crews are staged at the fairgrounds.

Matthew is still about 170 miles south west of us, so it’s going to be a long night here, and a longer one for the foolhardy souls who chose not to evacuate the islands east of here.

Woke up about half an hour ago. Didn’t lose power overnight. Still raining and a bit of wind.

It’s supposed to hit Charleston in an hour. Cross your fingers.

We are not at our house on Skidaway Island, near Savannah. All I know is that power is out. As our house is on the marsh, it is likely we are flooded. Just hoping that our 6 feet of elevation is enough to confine the damage to the crawl space.
