I don’t think he’s a troll, in the classical sense: I think he really is that dim. If you’re right, though, then he’s brilliant at it.

I mulled it over a bit… his style strikes me a bit too calculated for this board for it to be the product of simple dimness - it’s more like trolling dimness. Got a message board whose theme is fighting ignorance? Accuse them of being ignorant! If the membership is of a liberal, rational, tolerant bent… accuse them of being irrational and intolerant, just like the people they oppose! Blather, evince, repeat.

Maybe you’re right, but the comparison to my stoner roommate was also deliberate. There’s a version of open-mindedness that fails to distinguish between the validity of any opinion set at all, EXCEPT for one: it considers itself the only form of open-mindedness, and considers anyone who calls any OTHER opinion bigoted, wrong, close-minded, etc. to be close-minded itself.

An example:

Bob says that God wants to kill all Jews.
Frank says that that’s a ridiculous and close-minded opinion.
The stoner won’t have anything to say about Bob, but will call Frank a bigot, because, like, how can we really know God’s mind, dude, and aren’t all truths subjective, and maybe that’s Bob’s reality, man, do you grok what I’m saying?

I suspect that the less sober you are, the less irritating this manner of thinking is.

Anyway, this sort of weird meta-open-mindedness is squishy thinking to be sure, but it’s not necessarily dishonest. And folks who think this way might well be attracted to a messageboard that touts itself as an open-minded honest look at the cosmos, because they think they’re the only ones TRULY capable of doing so, since they’re more open-minded than open-minded people are.

You know, I never wander into these things, but in this case I have to say to Lance, I don’t think this word (troll) means what you think it means.

Generally the person who is debating/arguing with the troll is trying (with futility) to convince the troll that they are wrong and should come over to the side of reason and right(or at least their version of it). The troll is the one who is posting things simply to piss off the other person.

So no, just because someone is arguing at length with a troll, doesn’t mean that that person is also a troll. They may certainly be, for other reasons, but that isn’t one of them. Or at least not exclusively;

p.s. - I ended with a semi-colon just to piss off the punctuation trolls.

Meh. He’s not being any more obstinate or petulant on the point than **tomndebb **or magellan01, and he’s not even as tiresomely voluble as the latter.

Now: I’ll punctuate quotations any way I damn feel, btw, and the non-US approach does make more sense. So, unless you can show me an enforceable law, stuff your commas anywhere it’s convenient for you. So there too. :pbbbtttt:
