I’m following the SSM thread (it being one of my hot-button issues) and he is playing rhetoric games.
No, there is no physical or logical reason to automatically presume that all anti-SSM arguments are based on prejudice. However, like a pink crow, just because something *could *exist does not mean it does, and we will all apologize if you can show us one. So far, no anti-SSM argument has been presented that isn’t based on maintaining the “otherness” or inferior social position of homosexuals.
It seems to me that people who are arguing against lance strongarm have an awful tendency toward straw-man rephrasing of what he says, rather than simply rebutting what he actually says. If he’s wrong, say why he’s wrong, but don’t go through the gyrations of “In other words,” or “But that implies,” or “I think what he really means,” and so on. This is excruciatingly dishonest.
That said…lance…you need to work a little on your rhetorical skills. Your ripostes have a tendency to be just slightly out of line with the thrusts. You have a tendency to say things just a little off-kilter. I feel very strongly that your correspondents have been taking unfair advantage of this, trying to impute serious failures in reasoning on the basis of these very minor linguistic solecisms. Still, in at least two long-running debates, you could have avoided a lot of hassle by being just a bit more clear.

Please. We know what he’s saying. But the level of certainty he’s demanding is unreasonable. By his logic, we could not even say an apple will fall to the ground if dropped. There may be a chance – an infinitesimal chance, but still a chance – that gravity will be reversed for that particular object and it’ll go rocketing away from the earth. Because of that chance, saying “This apple will fall” before dropping it is arrogance.
If such a thing did happen, we’ll all go “HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT HOW DID THAT HAPPEN.” But until it does, we can be pretty confident it won’t happen.
