Hutterite kitchen, Winston-Salem NC

Help … anybody happen to have a picture of the sauce/baking hearth there? I have been searching online and cant find it, I’m about to say hell with it and drive down and take the picture mself!

Hmmm…The Salem part of W-S was settled by the Christian Brethren group the Moravians, not the Hutterites. And I can’t think of a sauce the Moravians are known for here as a specialty. They’re known for their thin Spice cookies, mighty tasty.

Winston-Salem is known for the sauce, Texas Pete, the main hot sauce in the Southeast. It’s wasn’t made by Moravians, though.

Does this help at all?

No but it is interesting =)

I toured the site back in '89, and I really want to build that hearth at the farm … I guess i will have to drive down for a weekend and hunt it down =)

I guess it is a good excuse for BBQ as well =)

No idea if this is what you’re looking for, but I did a search for Winston Salem hearth on Flickr (which brings up pics Google doesn’t) and found this. (Hutterite hearth brought nothing.) If it isn’t what you’re looking for, the photostreams for Winston Salem might have it (for, remember, it only comes up on keywords if the person who took the picture entered those keywords).

OK, well, here’s an old page by the Masonry Heater Association, that has some photos of Old Salem. In any case, if you’re wanting to do masonry work, they might be a good resource.

Thanks guys =) the masonary guys page had 2 good pictures of the hearth so I can sort of get the measurements off it [applied geometry, isn’t it great?] Your google0fu was stronger than mine =)

Though I am still thinking of running down with my roomie [her mom lives near there] as there is always a chance of good BBQ … =)
