Or perhaps the most iconic. Here in Cleveland it has to be Polish kielbasi and the numerous ethnic variations - Slovenian, Hungarian, Ukrainian - all good.
Here in the DC 'burbs:
I live in Vienna, where the most iconic sausage is the world-famous wiener, though the locals call it a Frankfurter. Conversely, when I used to live near Frankfurt, the locals called the same sausage a Wiener. For some reason, neither city wants to claim the sausage as its own.
But the wiener/frankfurter isn’t the most popular sausage in Vienna; that honour goes to the Käsekrainer, a thick cheese-filled sausage that is commonly eaten with a side of mustard and rye bread, and maybe also grated horseradish. Some sausage stands will also serve them in a long, thin loaf of white bread that’s been hollowed out, sort of like a hot dog.
This bunch are not far from me. I went there an bought some once
when i lived even closer, and they’re not 'alf bad.
Chicago area, the top ones would likely be:
- Hot dogs
- Polish sausage
- Italian sausage

Uncle Charley’s Sausages are made just a couple miles from our house.
They tend to call everything a “brat” in MN and WI, which may or may not be actual bratwurst.
In Sheboygan County, WI it’s the bratwurst, followed by the somersausage.
Is breakfast patty an option? If in North Carolina I ordered anything “sausage” without specifying, that’s what I’d expect.
My apologies if I’m misunderstanding.
I don’t know if California is particularly known for sausage. I guess if I had to pick one it would be chorizo. All the taquerias have it on the menu, and chorizo and eggs is not an uncommon breakfast/brunch item.
I actually like sweet sausage patties for a sandwich on a hamburg roll] (not the hot sausage). Always prefer patties for breakfast sausage rather than the link sausage.
When I thaw a package of 18 sausages (links) I slice then peel off the casing when they’re 75% thawed. I grill some as links and grill some Pattie’s that I form grill side.
I grill an entire package then put them in a Tupperware container in the fridge. Lunches for the week.
In St. Louis it’s Bratwurst. One year I was doing publicity for the giant July 4th celebration, and one of the fun facts I was given was that Brats outsold hot dogs by a wide margin.
About 90 minutes west of downtown are these people:
One of my sisters has a birthday in early October; I ordered supplies for her own little Oktoberfest one year.
Currywurst, hands down. It can actually be quite good.
Reindeer sausage is a big deal in Anchorage, although the reindeer content is likely minimal.
Have you ever experienced what in the States are called “Vienna Sausages”?
Here in Austin, probably Elgin sausage or chorizo (in a breakfast taco, of course).
