The secret on a PC (not sure about Macs) is to use “Alt” codes. Hold down the right “Alt” key, then type the 4-digit numeric code on the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard. (As with all things computerish, there are seven other “better” ways to do this–this is mine.)
The basic German codes are:
Alt + 0196 = Ä
Alt + 0228 = ä
Alt + 0203 = Ë
Alt + 0235 = ë
Alt + 0214 = Ö
Alt + 0246 = ö
Alt + 0220 = Ü
Alt + 0252 = ü
Alt + 0233 = ß
On my machine, (Win 95) you can find the mapping by executing c:\WINDOWS\CHARMAP.exe.
Select any character, the Alt code is displayed in the lower right corner of the window.
