This thread title and the fact he was mentioned in the last post 26 years ago seems appropriate. His magazine columns throughout the 90’s were one of the first I’d read just to see what he was cranky about that month.

Is John Dvorak Ever Right?

I’ve been reading PC magazine since around the time of my first computer in 1984 and Dvorak’s ramblings have been a fixture I think the whole time. Lately, though, he seems to be have become even nuttier than before and that’s saying a lot. Vista is going to take up 10 gigs on your hard drive? Every issue there’s something like this. I was wondering whether anybody tracks his predictions the way that for a time there was a website monitoring Marilyn vos Savant for mistakes. I’d bet large sums …

Old John C. Dvorak column - where to find?

There’s no need to speculate about this because Apple hardware is just generic PC hardware in a (maybe) nicer case. As such, you can just buy off-the-shelf hardware that matches Apple products and build a Hackintosh. It is of course totally unsupported and possibly illegal (depends on how enforceable the EULAs are), but in any case the barrier isn’t technology.

(I sometimes still think of old John C, mainly in the context about how he used to brag about having a pair of ISDN lines: a full 256 kilobits per second!
