I cant back-click to a subfolder ??? when I view images?

I’m not sure for the proper nomenclature for what my problem is…

I have downloaded a substantial number of images from the server at work, to an external drive (about 2 tb).
So…

  1. I click on MY Computer:
  2. I then click on the (EXT. Drive) icon:
  3. I click, then, on the folder that has the icons of my images: This takes a blamed long time to load.
  4. then, I click on the icon of the image that I want: View image…
  5. …then, I close image window. (I can’t back click, because there is no arrow).
At this point, I have no more windows, but, I still have a tab on the Taskbar so I can relaunch the program, which starts at step 3.

Now, for a complicating factor: I hook the HD up to my Windows 7 computer, (new computer in April), and when I close the image window (see No. 4) I can see my window that has all of the images of the Icons, and I don’t need to start at #3 again; I just click on the icon of the image that I want. This is the Good Part, with which I don’t need help!

When I hook the HD up to my XP OS computer, older computer, of course, when I close the image window, I have to go back to step three again, which takes the blamed long time referenced above. This repeating step three again is what I want to avoid, because it takes too, too, too long, and I have to view a lot of images each day.
I clicked on the View tab of the ‘image’ window, and looked for an “Open in separate Window” link, but, could not find one.

The files open in, IIRC, (I am away from XP OS computer, right now) either Microsoft Office Picture Manager, or Windows Photo Viewer…something like that.

So, my question is: Is there a way, available to me, to cause an image file to open in a different window? Or, is there some other image viewer that can overcome this problem?

Thanks for your help,
hh

On windows XP, have you tried right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Explore? Then you can navigate to the folder you want by clicking on the plus signs (in the left-hand side of the pane; the files in that folder will be visible in the right sided), until you get to the directory you want, then clicking on that folder.

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner, ZenBeam: as if I needed more grief, my home computer got shorted out by a lightning strike!
So, I’ll definitely give this a try!

Thanks for your effort, and help.

Best wishes,
hh

You’re probably better off just d/l’ing an image-viewer like IrfanView and adding all the files/folders to a slideshow for easy viewing.

i’ll also suggest Irfanview. it is fast. you have forward and backward navigation in a folder that is easy. you can do a slide show of a folder, easily stopping at any point. it will quickly open at any time or you could leave it open without nuisance.

Most excellent!
Thanks, guys!

Best wishes,

I’m not understanding your problem at step 5. If I follow your steps, when I close the image window my Explorer window is still there right where I left it. And if I’m wanting to view all the images in the folder, I don’t need to close the viewer to select the next one, I just use the arrow keys to flip from one image to the next. Or, I can press F11 to start a slideshow. XP and 7 work the same way, no additional software required.
