I can't stand it; how do you turn off graphic emoticons in AIM?!?

I’ve got AIM 1.5.129 for the Mac. It came with graphical emoticons by default, which I loathe. But I can’t find any way to turn them off in the preferences. When I try to “Edit My Expressions” in Preferences, I get taken to a WEBSITE where I can change the LOOK of said graphic emoticons, but I can’t find an option to turnthemoffgoddammitarrrrrggghhhh!

Ahem, sorry. I spent so long with an old version of AIM that I’m not used to this railroading. I’ve already gotten used to not being able to adjust the volume of AIM sounds without adjusting my computer’s sound (something else I used to be able to do with the old version). Any idea how I can make my emoticons look less like  and more like just a plain text colon and close-parenthesis? I’d love you forever!

AOL’s AIM client sucks. You can use Apple’s iChat for AIM, but I’m not sure if it lets you turn off smilies. However, the excellent Adium client lets you turn them off. It’s under the Appearance pane in the preferences.

Seconded on Adium. I don’t use Macs, but I know many who do and they all love Adium. It’s free software, too, unlike the AOL AIM client.

I have never used AIM, but a quick search brought this:

on the aim buddy list thing. click on edit at the top, where you see file etc., then scroll down to settings, and click on it. Then click on the the expressions tab. if you look on the bottom, there should be a “display emoticons as text instead of images” check that, then save.

It is from Yahoo Answers, so expect anything, though…

I have no idea what it means by “the AIM buddy list thing” - at least not when it apparently has menus. My regular “Edit” menu does not have a “Settings” listed on it.

ETA: Preferences (under the AIM menu) does have an Expressions tab, but it has no setting to turn off graphic emoticons.
