I create unique websites and I need some more ideas.

As a hobby, I create unique, novelty websites. Most recently this has included:

  • A simple site that asks people how their day has been: good or bad. The votes are then aggregated into a huge smiley face with its mouth bending to reflect the average vote. Also includes a real-time blog button with a smaller smiley on it.

  • A double-blind sexual interest survey. A person and his or her partner both take the quiz and matching questions are shown in a report. Only matching answers are shown though. If someone is interested in something weird and they don’t want to embaress themselves or their partner, that proclivity won’t show up in the report unless both people indicate a mutual interest. It’s a face saving thing for the more sexually adventurous, yet bashful folk.

  • A website in which you can create a custom RSS feed to which URLs are added. Once a day, each URL is automatically checked for changes within a certain tolerance. If a change it detected, it is displayed in your feed. It allows you to keep an eye on infrequently changing webpages via My Yahoo!, Google Reader, Page Flakes, etc.

As you can see, my ideas have been all over the map. However, I’ve been drawing a blank recently trying to come up with a new side project. Are there any Dopers out there that have an idea they think would make a cool website? As I said, this is a hobby, so I’m not looking to build the next MySpace. Far-reaching ideas are probably out of the question unless it can help pay my bills. Thanks!

How about a Unique Holiday Gift database.
People can post breif descriptions of clever/unique/off-the-wall gifts they have purchased for the up coming holiday season, and offer links if it is available online. Then, shoppers who just don’t know what to get someone can browse the list of what others in their situation have come up with. You could categorize gifts as “for Father,” “for Wife,” “for Close Friend,” Etc.

LInks to these sites?

CoG888,

That’s actually a pretty cool idea. A potential problem though is online retailers shilling their stuff. I know that there are several other gift idea sites out there, but they aren’t much more than fronts for garnering comissions via sales referrals. Something could probably be done to curtail that though.

I didn’t mention the links since I didn’t want to be accused of pimping them (both have Google Adwords, USQ also has PayPal) :

The RSS one is half broken until I get the spidering backend moved over to a new server.

I thought about that too… I don’t know a way to prevent that except for extensive moderating. Or maybe have a user-flagging system, like at craigslist, where users can flag inappropriate material or obvious spamming/plugging posts. That would still require a lot of work on your end, though.
