That’s my office. I got sidetracked on another task, otherwise I’d have put up another post explaining it a little better.
This runoff election is very winnable for the Democrats.
How are you feeling about it? If turnout is the key, as Nate Silver and Kos have both said, do we have the edge, or do they?
I suspect that it will be tough for the Dems. There are a lot of Independents who voted Dem this time who think that a filibuster proof majority is too much power. It would have been easier if he were potentially the 55th Democratic Senator or something rather than the 60th. Will we know about Franken by the time the run-off takes place?
Almost certainly not. I don’t think the completion of this recount is going to be the end of the story.
Well, it’s not a recount. It’s a runoff. The thing is that runoff elections only garner about 15% (!!!) turnout. This means that whomever can mobilize their base (plus a few extras, if possible) wins. If we get to 20% turnout, we win. Hell, if we get to 16% or 17%, we stand a chance to win. There’s a population of people that strongly dislike Republicans that voted for the Libertarian candidate. The Democratic Candidate, Jim Martin, is a fiscal conservative and has the track record to prove it as well.
Franken’s race could still take time. That may be ugly, but this is the 60th seat and it’s right here, within our grasp. All we have to do is turn our folks out.

I know this is mpsims but do we really need this wing nut? The Democrats have already killed the Republicans. Why hope to add salt to the wound? As a Republican Franken is exactly the type of Democrat that Republicans absolutely hate, including me.
The Republican nut jobs have mostly been purged, this doesn’t mean that it is ok to replace them with left wing nut jobs either.
Well, don’t get replaced. Win your elections and you’ve got nothing to worry about.
