I.E. / Outlook Express

  • Arg! I had Outlook Express set up to check mail every time I signed on - it was specified as the mail program when I set up the dialup connection. For some reason (I did load Word off a suspicious Office 97 CD) now it won’t do it; now when I hit the mail button on IE’s toolbar the only options I get are “send page” and “read news”. In the Internet Properties, there’s dropdown boxes to specify mail program, news (Outlook Express) and internet call (MS Netmeeting), but it won’t let me type anything inside the place for specifying mail program- it just stays blank. I can still go to the desktop and hit the shortcut to start it, but it doesn’t check mail automatically now. What gives? - MC

If I may suggest, go to Add/Remove Programs in your control panel and remove IE/Outlook Express. Then reinstall them from the CD or download them from the Internet. That should clear things up with the least amount of trouble.

What version of Outlook Express??? Youll have to reinstall the newest one you can find as you over wrote some files…or you can try the SFC, system file checker, RUN:SFC

      • Doh!
      • Well sheet.
      • Somebody at school told me how’s to do it: you set the default mail program in the properties of Outlook, not IE, like I was attempting to do. It looks like you’re supposed to do it like I was trying, but no.
  • Also, as I bought my system at the store prebuilt, I have only a recovery disk, so I can’t seem to load just any one thing off it. The files on the CD are compressed, or stored all in one file, or something; I don’t know. I can only re-load the original software, and then have to reinstall everything else I put on the computer. - MC
