I feel sorry you're probably dying, but really not all that much

This is, to some degree, stupid, but for some reason this seems like it is in much poorer taste when it is about people that are dying, not people that are dead. I know, rationally, that it doesn’t make any difference, than our words will not get back to them, etc., but if my mom or daughter did something really stupid and I was sitting in the hospital waiting any minute for the worst, I’d be appalled if it were internet-fodder. Somehow, once it’s over it doesn’t seem as tacky. But I can’t articulate why.

My thoughts on reading this thread pretty much exactly. The story linked in the OP is pure Darwin.

This has been going on for quite awhile amongst certain segments of the transgendered population; such “pumping parties” have resulted in a good handful of deaths. In that case, it makes some sense: a desperate gender dysphoric individual without the resources to be under the psychiatric care required by most doctors may well be driven to seek underground procedures, and breasts and booty may feel more important (being visible to the outside world) than SRS.

But for cisgendered women, I gotta wonder why they didn’t seek a reputable surgeon. Butt enhancing implants are fairly widely offered. Cost seems the only likely factor, perhaps combined with unbelievable gullibility. Maybe when your friend swears she knows this woman who’s a really real doctor and she does these booty lifts that are really just a bunch of shots, not really a surgery, and if you do it after hours, outside the office, she can get you an amazing friends-only deal… I could certainly see many people jumping at an opportunity for off-the-books Botox by someone they believed to be reputable and vouched for by someone they knew. If these women weren’t very well read on the procedure they were interested in (BIG mistake), and thought “oh, just like collagen injections, but for the butt, not the lips” I could see them agreeing to the sillicone shots.

Still, the second the Tupperware came out, they should have ran. Except, given how much some people implicitly trust anyone they believe to be doctors, surely it wasn’t their place to question the nice doctor doing them such a favor, she must know what she’s doing.

Gullibility does snowball like that sometimes.

But hey, I myself going to be seeing an underground “cutter” myself fairly soon, for some minor surgical body modification that I haven’t been able to find a local doctor willing to do (due to liability reasons and such), so maybe I’m incredibly stupid too. If I make the paper, feel free to pit me.

Now that’s something I hadn’t ever even thought of. Can you link me to some news stories and/or studies on the “pumping party” phenomenon? I have a particular interest in trans-centric news and trends, and new info is always welcome.

That being said - do you mind if I ask what you’re modifying, and the reasons that “regular” doctors have given for being unwilling to perform the procedure? Again, this is an area of interest to me, but I understand if it’s too personal or private.

Mmm reverse RO.

TSRoadmap has quite a lot of cites and info: Silicone injection resources – Transgender Map

I try to keep fairly in the loop on trans issues myself, but I believe first heard of the phenomenon via a general news site with regards to sentencing the injectors after a transgirl had died. It has been featured on various news and crime television shows at least a couple times, and I could almost swear there’s been an episode of a CSI/Law & Order type show that mentioned it (how you know a criminal practice has truly arrived!) but I don’t recall the details.

I wavered on mentioning it all, since I don’t want to at all attempt to turn this thread into OH HEY I’M DOING SOMETHING REALLY WEIRD LOOK AT ME, but the timely nature of this subject coming up right when it looks like my own, fairly rigorous, search for a cutter-stitcher has come to end felt worth commenting on. On one hand, I’ve become more educated on the (relatively minor) procedure I’m planning to undergo than many people do on far more invasive elective surgeries, am aware of what standards of clean to demand (and am comfortable walking out if need be), and have sought many, many references, so I don’t feel like I’m doing something akin to what the subject of this pit thread did. On the other, I’m undergoing underground surgery myself, and know that most people, including (probably) most Dopers, would probably see little difference.

As for what it is, I’m half tempted to start a thread, but as a mostly-lurker (and unfortunately sporadic poster) I don’t want to have any appearance of attention whoring. Please feel free to PM me, however, I’m happy to discuss it with anyone who’s sincerely curious.

And most doctors, (and all I could reasonably offer my business to) refuse the procedure I’m seeking simply because it’s unnecessary and quite weird. Five, ten years ago, before the media and a few lawmakers caught wind of it, one had a much better chance of lucking across a professional willing to do something “different.” Now that it’s somewhat known, most don’t wish to be associated with it.

Just to avoid this truism, I continued looking for my remote in two more places after I’d found it.

It’s good to be thorough. stoid has looked everywhere and hasn’t found any of her keys.

I’ve got a tiny little nitpick about the linked article and the OP. It seems odd to hear them say a J Lo booty. The woman who did the surgery is black, and from the sound of the name of one of the victims, they were probably black, too. In the black community, big booties abound, and have been coveted by our flatter bootied sisters long before J Lo was praised in the media for her booty. In other words, these two miserable saps more likely dying trying to have a booty like Shenequa than J. Lo.

Oh, come the hell on, people. Sure, we’ve all done stupid shit in our lives. All of us. But are we really equating losing your keys with letting someone whose credentials you know nothing about inject a substance you know nothing about into your body under very clearly non-sterile conditions? Really?

'Cause those seem like totally different levels of stupid to me. One is garden-variety dingbat, the other is super-king-size-ultra-mega-colossal-huge grade-A moron.

And I have to think that if this thread were about 2 guys named Bubba and involved liquor and the words “Y’all watch this!” people would be lining up around the block to talk about how some folks are just too damn stupid to live.

Everywhere except where they are, unfortunately…der…

So tell us, did you find it again?

I did, actually, leaving me with the Schroedinger-like dilemma of whether or not it had actually been found in the last place I looked.

The second one had cat poop on it, if that helps.

There’s a comic element here, all right.

Leaving aside the question of whether the story is legitimate (anybody else find confirmation or even a hit on any of the three names mentioned in the story anywhere?), if we take it at its face, it’s merely a story of a couple of women whose unhappiness and poverty overcame their skepticism (however much they started with) when confronted with a third someone willing to lie to, cheat, and perhaps fatally poison them.

The OP is quite a sketch, starting a thread in the boiler of the BBQ Pit on account of not feeling anything much about the episode at all. But let’s assume that the depth and intensity of the OP’s indifference, spurred on by the opportunity to experience feelings of superiority, made this its natural milieu.

CrazyCatLady has her own hierarchy of understandable-to-permissible-to-hilarious-to-deplorable-to-you-don’t-deserve-tears-at-your-death layers of stupidity, which is fine, but I hope she knows that everyone could and probably does show up on at least a few such lists, and no one ever gets to the top.

It seems likely that most of us die, when we do, as a result of one or more poor decisions we have made. Since we all seem to die no matter how smart we are or think we are, a humble and honest tear, or at minimum a dignified silence, at the death of another, is the least we can do, if only in the spirit of comradeship.

The comic element is that we can find humor in stupidity and death, pretending that we are not, all of us, charter subscribers to both.

They think that the woman injected them with industrial silicone. Holy crap.

This reminded me of something else I saw: a body-builder (male) in Miami wanted awesome pectorals. So he decided to have pectoral implants done-by an unlicensed “surgeon” (who later turned out to be a garage mechanic with no medical qualifications)! The “surgeon” trided to stuff the silicone-filled bag in to the guy’s chest, with a kitchen spatula! The job went awry-they victim woke up from the anesthesia (in terrible pain)-and wound up with weird, asysmmetrical male boobs!
I cannot imagine somebody doing this!

I concur. I’m having knee surgery this week because of a dirt bike accident years ago. Was it smart riding alongside the railroad tracks in tall grass without any protective gear? Not really. Was it smart to not go to a doctor when I couldn’t bend my knee at all for several days and it took months to heal completely (until I reinjured it anyway)? Not so much, but I was 15. Am I going to get a friend or coworker to do the cutting so I can save a few bucks? Fuck no, I’m not that stupid. I’ll probably be considered as such though, if losing one’s keys is compared to it.

The women who received the injections didn’t really do anything immoral, unlike the one who performed them. I wouldn’t say they deserve to die. However, the gene pool will be a hell of a lot cleaner without them.

They are black, and while the picture I saw was your typical portrait shot (no booty included), they appeared quite beautiful to me. So why they had self-images that required bigger booties to be beautiful to themselves I just don’t understand. But then, who ever does understand another’s self image.
