I Finally Understand..

Yes, but no self-respecting New Englander will go near one. I refuse to eat shellfish that’s been shipped from a warehouse in Wichita.

The only seafood I eat is tuna from a can, fishsticks, McDonald’s fillet o’ fish, Burger King Whaler, and breaded frozen fish “fillets” made from bits of fish.

Strangely enough the butter is not anywhere near as bad as the seafood itself.
This is a pretty good Wiki article on Gout. I have a friend that suffers from. He gave up Seafood and cut back on beef, because he did not want to give up beer.

Of course if you are suffering or suspect you are, go see a Doctor, because I am far from one,
Jim

Fish and shellfish, actually. And red meat. And animal proteins in general. But not lots of other things commonly believed to be triggers. More here.

Have them go to a rheumatologist or even just their regular doctor. There’s several medications available that can either prevent gout or severely restrict the length of an episode.

Except in Spain. Not only is pork not a red meat, it is not a meat at all! They call it “the four-legged olive”. Nava, please tell them I am not whooshing them

Yeah, my dad’s on it. My brother isn’t, because he’s just had the one episode . . . so far. But IIRC just taking the meds doesn’t mean you can go back to wholesale inhalation of shellfish; they may lessen the attack but can’t prevent you from having one. Apparently the condition is sufficiently painful that my dad is willing to forego some of his favorite foods to avoid experiencing it again. And that’s quite the sacrifice in my family – we’re what my Dakota granddad used to call “good eaters”.

Yep, I’d have to characterize the pain as “astonishing”. From what I gather, gout sufferers will have different sensitivities to different items. Red meat and shellfish don’t seem to bother me. As long as I’m taking Allopurinol I can eat them somewhat regularly and they’ll never trigger an attack. But I’ve given up beer and red wine entirely. Twern’t worth the pain. I hope your brother finds suitable relief as well.

Same same in a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant in Hong Kong (apologies for recounting this again): pork chops on the menu. I am thinking it’s some clever fake-meat alternative, so ask what it’s made of. “Pig,” says the waiter.

“But pig is an animal,” I say.

  • “No.”

“Well if it isn’t an animal, what is it?”

  • “Vegetable.”

(Except he said it “WEDGE-it-u-BOO” which made it all the more hilarious - though I suspect that’s a bit racist, considering I was a guest in his nation and he was speaking my language.)

I went to school in Buffalo. I still hate the Yankees, though.

Outside of that, I’ve got one thing to tell ya: how ya doin’?

My poor brother got it in his big toe and limped along the streets of NYC to the doctor’s office. In his usual “unique” style, he leaves me a message saying “I have gout” <click>. Next time he calls he exclaims noisily about how I didn’t give due weight to his announcement. :smack: As far as I know he still eats red meat so he must be taking meds.

Yeah, we’ve got em back east. They’re everywhere (in America) to my knowledge.

The parents took me there for all-you-can eat crab legs to see how much damage I could do. I steamrolled my way through many plates of crabby goodness, but eventually had to stop because the spines hurt my fingers too much. On the way home, I stopped at McDonalds and had 10 chicken nuggets and a large fry.

Ouch. That sucks. I wonder what kind of pain gout is. From what I hear, it’s very unpleasant. Is it a sharp pain? A dull pain? Swelling?

Oh Mickey, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey Mickey!

Sharp, like crushed glass in your joints.

It almost feels like a broken toe to me.

But I rarely have attacks, so for now I’m good. The day I have to give up shellfish is the day I kill myself.

 There oughta be a board rule against this cross-thread earworming! :stuck_out_tongue:

Tuna is red meat, technically speaking

Never had it either.
