I found the cyclist everyone thinks of when they think of bad cyclists

It all boils down to there being a subset of arrogant idiots for every given vehicle type. There’s many arrogant, idiotic drivers out there, too, including some family members and people I know. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve had to ride as a passenger in a car with someone who, because of messing with their dad-gummed cell phone, almost caused accidents.

Agreed. Can’t was for these.

Yeah, I saw that. As the police said, the driver should not have turned just then, but the motorcyclist clearly had a death wish.

Incidentally, the encounter I had with a hit-and-run driver was almost exactly the same type of accident as the one in the video – except on the other side of the road, of course, and I wasn’t speeding! I was proceeding through a green light when a driver going the opposite direction decided it would be a great time to turn left across my right-of-way. I wasn’t going fast, fortunately; I hit the car’s hood at maybe 20mph and flipped over it with my bike. I was only slightly injured, but the bicycle was a total loss.

While it was technically the driver’s fault, I realized after that accident that as a cyclist I could have done more to prevent it. I was too focused on taking my right of way, rather than anticipating possible mistakes by drivers and being ready to react. I’m much more vigilant now, and I’ll even slow down a bit before taking a green light if I feel that my present speed would leave me too little time to react if I needed to. Haven’t had an accident since.
