I have to get our vet to show me how to open my cat’s mouth next time she’s in - I’ve been trying to get at her tartar, but I can’t get her freaking mouth open. I know there’s a trick to it that involves the jaw joint, but it’s not working for me.
The few times I’ve had to pry their mouths open the cats weren’t pleased and neither was I. What typically works is that I get the toothbrush very wet and let some water drip in through the side of their mouth when I’ve got their lip pulled up. They want to lick at it and so they open their mouths just enough for me to get the brush in and scrub.
Do you have a helper holding her so you have both hands free? Is she cradled or is she draped over and arm/shoulder? I went to ‘over the shoulder’ when I saw they fought more when cradled as the water going down their throat stressed them and there was some aspiration.
Man, does this make me sound like a cat lady.
