Ok, so I got a good giggle out of the OP. All of the topics (save for the D&D – except in rare situations) are ones that would come up around my dinner table. Did I mention I am female? Yeh. The funny thing about it all is that my kids (and my daughter’s Not-Boyfriend ™ all talked me into teaching them M:TG a few weekends ago. They have bugged me since to play with them some more. I’d probably be out of my league if I played with anyone who is currently into it, though, as all my cards are from the early 90’s (yep, I gots me some original Legends cards, coupla dual lands, and about a billion angels, vampires and so on) but apparently my husband mentioned me teaching the kids to play to our favourite barrista who began drooling at the prospect of someone to play M:TG with, go fig.
As mentioned previously, it’s a good lesson in perspective – there will always be someone nerdier than you. Let’s face it, even Stephen Hawking has probably looked at someone and thought “oh my god, what a nerd!” Just be glad you can hang out with them when you want to look cool by comparison
ETA: this coming from the chick who took her sdmb name from her Runescape character
Is this where I mention that I learned how to play Magic and read up on D&D so I’d fit in better with the gaming geeks I’ve come to know and love?
I’ve always been a math and science geek, but because of my rural upbringing I never had the opportunity to do gaming, or even to be friends with people “like me.” I’m happier and more comfortable with my friend set now than I’ve ever been.

Reminds me of advice I read somewhere once about weaseling out of admitting you hadn’t read a book someone has mentioned. When asked if you’ve read it, you respond, “Well, not in English” and refuse to discuss the topic any further.
In my household there are more females who play M:tG than there are males. A 3-1 ratio at the moment. They’re all begging me to run a new D&D campaign for them, and most have characters on two or more MMORPGs. We’re raising the next generation of gamer chicks. Girls who bicycle, swim, and climb trees as much as they play games. They also love knitting, sewing, singing, theatre, geocaching, painting, and helping me build the sets for local theatrical productions. They spent the 4th setting off fireworks, riding horses, and playing “water balloon baseball.”
Wait. Obviously, I ran out of countable fingers, 'cause this ain’t quite the zombie thread I thought it was. My apologies. And thus it’s opened back up.
