I gots a new baby snake! (Wanna help name her?)

Yup. You just can’t have one, it seems (but, I assure you, you can have just two! This is it for us!). I’ve been waiting for weeks for the new itty bitty babies–the store owner breeds and raises these corn snakes at her home, then brings the hatchlings in to sell–and lo and behold, they were there today!

Without wasting much time, the hubby and I went in to look at them, thought it over while shopping in the neighboring grocery store, then went back to buy our new hatchling girl! (We also bought big Henry, my other adult snake, a new cage–he was really too large for the old one–so new girl gets his old home.)

She’s just two weeks old (everyone, “Awwwwwww!”) and ate her very first meal last night (very important with babies–gotta make sure they’re eating). She’s about 10 inches long and smaller in diameter than a pencil! Contrast this to Henry–5 feet long and about as big around as a silver dollar. She’s also a “normal” corn; we thought that would make a good contrast to Henry’s amelanistic/albino coloring–better to teach the students in the classroom the difference between the two. And yes, there was a reason we bought a female–she’ll be breedable in 2 years. Of course, Henry may be sterile from his whole cancer surgery thingy from a few months ago, but it’ll be interesting to try. Now there’s a classroom project!

We haven’t named her yet, but we chose her because she has a distinctive “Y” on top of her head. Thus, “Yoko” is one of the top name choices for the moment. But–we’re open to suggestions. Any other good snake-girl-names you can think of beginning with Y?

You can see a (huge, sorry, unsure about how to compress) pic of her here

Just had to share!

Ew.

Okay, ummm “Yolanda”

This is high on my list of things I never expected to say, but…that is one cute snake.

I’ve always thought “Semiramis” would be a good name for a snake, though I’m not sure why. You could go with “SemiramHISS” if you felt like making a pun out of it.

Well, I gotta admit she is kinda cute…for a SNAKE.

Hey, don’t be knocking snakes. Any animal that eats mice and chipmunks whole is A-OK in my book.

Cute girly Y names from my baby names book:
Yamilla–beautiful
Yoki—bluebird
Yuki–snow
Yakez–heaven
I’d personally avoid Yoko just because I’d get sick of people asking if I named her after Yoko Ono (Oh No!). But if you must use Yoko I guess I could allow it just this once. Hrumph.
:stuck_out_tongue:
She’s a beaut Ruffian, and I am highly jealous… Enjoy her!

Frick. Server ate this the first time. Fortunately, I copied it for just such a case:

Thank you all for the ideas, and for the compliments on our adorable baby. We like her.

A couple of things to keep in mind with the name suggestion thingy–she’s a classroom pet. Technically, she is mine–she goes where I go, er, so to speak–but like Henry, she’ll spend 9 1/2 months out of the year in a classroom of 5th graders (about half of which are second language learners). Obscure, but creative, names that I’d love would not work so well with 10-year-olds. Meanwhile, most–if not all–of them have no idea who Yoko Ono is. BTW, bella, are you a big Yoko fan?

Lola, I thought of “Yolanda” almost right away–but hubby DeathLlama did not take a shine to it (to say the least) so that’s a no-go.

Keep those names coming. If you have a super-cool idea that doesn’t start with Y, try it on us! A couple of years ago a Doper suggested “Cornelius” for my first corn snake, and that was a big hit.

If it’s a small snake?

Watchband.

Big snake?

Boots.

(Sorry! Snakes oog me out. No legs… slithery… plus I lived with an ex that had a huge boa that was like 9 ft long and was evil…)

Awww… she’s so purty!

How about Yancy? Yellaphone? Hey You?

SMPTE - (Semp-TEE), inside joke for Frank Zappa fans. You could spell it “Semptie” if you wanted to.

Why (okay, that’s a bad pun, but I had to get it out)

Wanna explain it to us who don’t know a lot about Frank Zappa?

I was just gonna suggest ‘Zappa’.

It’s supposed to start with the letter “Y”, people!!!

I love corn snakes (aka red rat snakes)

I used to have one named Egor. That there is one cute-ass tiny snake, lemme tell you!!

When I caught Egor he was about twice that size.

Yentl

running

I wouldn’t call her anything. What are the odds she’ll listen anyway?

Am not going to do more than mention that that ‘Y’ if reversed looks rather phallic…
That said, it looks like there is a ‘p’ above the ‘Y’, so perhaps Pi. (pY) or pYle.
Though if you just want Y; Yvette, Yukon (I know, better a boys name, still it can help teach geography. ) or Yago.
If you are a Monty Python fan (And with a constrictor snake how can you not be) spell it Yatched, and pronounce it Mangrove Throatwarbler.

Yodel

Just want to reiterate it doesn’t have[ to start with a Y. Her markings (and yes, Narile, I did notice the phallic resemblence) are what first got our attention, but it doesn’t have to be the inspiration for her name.

I’ve had…lessee…6 snakes now. My first three (all females) were named after biblical figures–Eve (I loved the irony), Bathsheba, and Jezebel. Hmm. I could perpetuate the female snake=female biblical villainess and maybe call her Delilah.

[sub]personally I do like Yolanda, but DeathLlama thinks it’s just too icky[/sub]
