I saw Creed yesterday. I really liked it. I think I’d say it was the third best Rocky movie, but a very close third best (ie almost equal with Rocky II). Of course, I tend to think of Rocky-Rocky II as being one four hour movie in two parts, so maybe I should count Creed as the second best Rocky movie.
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, writer-director of Fruitvale Station, teaming up again with Fruitvale Station lead actor Michael B. Jordan, this was the first sign that the movie had the potential to be really good. Michael B. Jordan was excellent, definitely a star on the rise. I don’t think he’ll be tainted by the disastrous Fantastic Four, not when he’s got this movie as his follow up.
Stallone was great as well. He’s lived in that character for so long, if he’s going to put Rocky Balboa on screen you’re going to recognize him as being the guy you’ve known for 40 years.
I think I have only two complaints. I would have liked to see more from Phylicia Rashād (now the third actress to play Creed’s wife). My other complaint: Creed’s rise came too quickly. Still, at least they didn’t… which would have been going too far. Since they didn’t… they at least kept it ground a little bit more realistically.
Anyone else see it?
If you’re even remotely interested, and especially if you’re a Rocky fan, I recommend it.
…Creed does not win the big fight at the end.
He goes the distance and the judges call it in a split decision, just like the first (and sixth) Rocky movie- 1 for the underdog and 2 for the champ.
