I hate Halloween parties

In general, I like getting together with friends for a good time.

However, I hate having to dress up like an immature moron. I have no imagination, and can’t be bothered to spend a lot of money on a single-use piece of crap costume.

This year my good friend is holding a Halloween party and I will be out of town on business that weekend; I’ve never been happier.

I really, really do not like dressing up in any kind of a costume
Am I alone?

If it were only the things that the OP complains about, I’d enjoy it. But what has happened is that the the adults have stolen Halloween from the children. It’s become a prequel to the other cynical, end-of-year, desperate measures that merchants hype to “make up” for the slow year of business. In keeping, the adults have made it all about outdoing each other with costumes, or tying too hard to “shock” and ending up just kind of sad and pathetic. But whatever.

One thing I do hate is the weather, though.

Recently I had to ‘Zombie Up’ for a party and I quite enjoyed it. I hadn’t dressed up since halloween as a kid so it was weird at first. After the ‘party’ (an English teaching thing in a summer school) a friend said have I ever looked at Cosplay, which I had been interested in but not had the opportunity to, er, ‘play in’ (if that’s the correct term).

OP I also lack in the imagination department; I had to get another person (she was also very attractive) to dress me up. I didn’t feel all that comfortable but it was an interesting and stimulating experience. As to the expense I wore cheap clothes and was covered in various paints so I looked a bit ghoulish. It was a fun night, overall.

My daughter, when she doesn’t feel up to costuming for Halloween, takes a line out of one of the Addams Family movies and goes as a serial killer: “They look like everybody else.”

Generally, we at Chateau Pepperwinkle go all out with costumes and makeup on Halloween (and SF/Fantasy conventions).

I’ve always hated dressing up in costume, for any reason. (Although I don’t mind suit and tie, for some reason I don’t think of that as a costume.)

So since I’ve become an adult, and could make my own decisions, I’ve decided to never wear a costume again. I’ve pretty much stuck by that decision. Oh, I’ll go to a Halloween party on a rare occasion, but I won’t wear a costume.

You don’t have to wear a costume to go to a Halloween party. You could just not wear one, or buy one of those t-shirts that says “Costume” on it. Not that big a deal.

I love costumes, myself, but wouldn’t be offended if you didn’t wear one to my party.

The email invitation states “Costumes are required.”

Not that they wouldn’t let me in without one, but I’d rather just not have to deal with it. Thankfully this year I have a valid excuse.

I’m going as one of those kids who are too old to trick or treat, and ring your bell an hour later than everyone else, with no costume, and stuff candy in their pockets, because they couldn’t be bothered to remember to bring a bag.

I haven’t been to a Halloween party in a couple of years (I’m now 55) but did so almost every year for many, many years. I went to a couple sans costume due to lack of planning but felt like an outsider. We always tried to make our own costumes. No pirates or ghosts but something original and creative. Many years ago it was an anniversary of the Jack-the Ripper killings. So I dressed up with a cardboard zipper (triangle thing with the pull tab) thing over my head and the teeth made of duct tape down the front of me and “JACK” written on my back. It was topical so people got it and I won the best costume prize. The things other people come up with can be quite interesting. Costumes & alcohol - what could be more fun? C’mon, loosen up!

Do something horrible like go in drag, and wearing a thong bikini. It’s a costume, but nobody will ever want you to wear one ever again!

Most I’ve ever spent on a costume was maybe 20 bucks and an hour of prep work. Ghoul make-up kit and a black cowl; already had a black wool sweater, black jeans, and heavy black shoes.

Won an award for that.

Don’t want to dress up?

Do what lazy people do when they have to wear a costume: throw on a pair of jeans and a football jersey! Voila! Instant costume!

Or a pair of thrift store bib overalls and John Deere baseball cap: instant farmer.

Did that for a youth group party one year.

I hate costumes, I hate parties, I hate dressing up, I hate Halloween.

There’s not much I want to dress as that I wouldn’t rather just be.

I normally enjoy Halloween parties. Dressing up is fun. This year, a friend is throwing a themed party: Zombie Wedding. I hate putting on a bunch of makeup, because I always break out. I think I’ll go as a pre-zombied bridesmaid. That way the other guests will have prey.

That sucks. I have friends who throw an annual Halloween party, but costumes are definitely optional. Wear one if you’re into it, and don’t if you’re not. It’s usually about 50/50 people in costume vs. people who aren’t.

I dislike mandatory anything for party attendance.

That’s not right. I like Halloween, but I do not enjoy dressing up in costume. If pressed, I would probably wear jeans and my Black Sabbath t-shirt I got at a recent concert and go as “rocker chick”.

You can add Halloween to Christmas, New Years Eve, and Thanksgiving to my list of things I don’t like. I had one fun Halloween once, 32 years ago. Even the kids seem to get more stress about costumes than enjoyment from the whole thing. If it floats your boat, go for it. I’ll be home with the lights off.

I like dressing up and going to Halloween parties, but my problem is that I usually can’t tell what anyone else is supposed to be. My friends often dress up as obscure (to me) pop culture characters.
