I hate Subway!

There was a brief foray into Zimbabwe, of all places. The subs were ok, but really expensive.

They did not last long, but I liked them well enough.

Then again, at the time I was a stoner, so pretty much anything edible tastes good.

For a real treat, instead, meet the “Gatsby”, a delicious, delicious abomination of a samwich containing a huge range of ingredients but always a large loaf of bread and fries. Various accompaniments, eg, egg & steak, chicken, more french fries…cheese. They are cut into 4 pieces so you can share.

Each one will shorten your life by a measurable amount, but man… they are good.

I got the one I used to go to shut down. They were doing Dirty Business!

I guess the joke’s on me.

Burger King in the University town near me got shut-down.
Heck, they were actively dealing drugs at the location.

Subway was in Walmart. But got booted for turning into a teen hangout or something.

They are near a Salon supply store now and a Salon.
Wow, that’s a smelly area. But inside the Subway it’s pretty decent.

It is what it is. Don’t go enough to gripe.

Now if Taco Bell or Sonic have a problem…

I am a vet and got a free 6 inch turkey sub with toppings, a free small fountain drink and a free car wash voucher at our local Sheetz (PA/Virginia/W.VA+) convenience store/gas station. The folks at Sheetz were awesome.

Their subs are really meaty and filling.

It was the first time I had actually went out and took advantage of the Veteran’s Day offerings. There were quite a few I did not manage to get - maybe next year if I am still around.

Also got 20% off at Dollar General.

I rarely go to our local Subway. Maybe once a year.

This does not surprise me at all. One here was prostituting.

So you really could Have It Your Way.

Specifically, it’s entirely a franchise operation. There’s only one corporate-owned location and it’s a test restaurant near their HQ.

Also of note - it’s now owned by the same VC firm that owns Jimmy John’s.

To us, individual consumers, it’s frustrating that local Subways may not participate in promotional deals like this one.

My understanding is that Subway (corporate) treats its franchisees like crap in a number of ways.

From this article on a website about franchises and franchisees:

But did you have a fake Burger King? I remember when this happened. This BK also had the strangest drive-through - there was another building on one side of it & a roof over it. You can see it on the left side in the photo.

No they were a real BK.

It was a big stink…News media(what we have) was allover it.

6 people were arrested. The shop shut down. I suspect never to arise again.

The footlongs make him feel insecure?

Not bad speculation but I was thinking more along the lines of something red.

Now, I like Subway sandwiches, but yeah the coupon thing is insane.

The coupons are usually combinations that I’ll never use, and the free cookie coupon “cannot be combined with any other offer”. Which makes them effectively useless. And then the pure discount sandwich coupons usually can’t be used with any of the specialty of the month sandwiches. The stores by me always have an in-house sign listing every sandwich the coupon isn’t good for. It’s a long list.

I hate that Subway corporate puts the franchisees in this position.

But I do love me a good BMT.

This matches my ratings. I first discovered Jersey Mike’s when I was making monthly trips between Chicago and NC; there was a Jersey Mike’s at RDU and I used to pick one up while waiting for my flight home. I now occasionally order a giant, eat half of it and save the other half for the next day. There’s a Firehouse near me and I take advantage of their $5 6-inch subs. I haven’t had Jimmy John’s in a while, but used to get them delivered when I went to my Chicago-area cons.

We have a Subway very close to our house, in fact it’s the closest fast food place to us.

I can’t think of the last time we went there. Their hours are awkward because I guess they can never keep staff around and they don’t serve breakfast; they only open for lunch and (maybe) dinner.

Slightly farther away is a Jimmy John’s. Their hours are reliable, they can have your food ready very quick in the drive thru, and they’re halfway decent (much better than Subway in my opinion).

Unfortunately we don’t have a Jersey Mike’s or Firehouse nearby. Jersey Mike’s is in the next town over and we’d have to drive quite far on the freeway to get to where a Firehouse is at.

But Jimmy John’s is good enough and really convenient so that’s our go-to.

I will say that I don’t hate Subway in general, and my overall reliable favorite is the BMT. If I need to get something there, I like that one. Their meatball sub also tastes okay but it’s the messiest sandwich in the world and I think putting whole big round meatballs on a hoagie roll is the stupidest idea ever. At least slice them in half like Quiznos used to for fucks’ sake.

My old Subway favorite once upon a time was to get a tuna sub, add extra mayo (because they don’t use nearly enough) and add bacon. The combo of the bacon and tuna somehow elevated a crappy sandwich into something delicious. But the last time I ordered a tuna sandwich at Subway (years ago) it made me really sick, so I’ll never do that again.

yeah, I’m a bit of a risk taker, but ordering seafood at a Subway is not something I have been able to bring myself to do

I don’t even recall the last time I’ve had a Subway sandwich. Maybe never at all. But by what I hear, it’s basically the McDonald’s of hoagies - cheap, but are okay enough to eat. I much prefer Cousin’s and Jersey Mike’s for a take-out sandwich.

Generally the salami tastes like salami, the ham tastes like ham, the mayo tastes like mayo, etc. If you order something on the menu that you recognize you’re almost surely going to end up with something that you expect.

They do have some weird sauces and stuff, and you might be gambling with those, but overall it’s not going to be all that different than what you’d make in your kitchen with regular grocery items.

Many years ago (ugh, decades ago now, shit) I worked in an office building in downtown Seattle that had a Subway on the ground floor. So lunch at Subway was just an elevator ride away. And as you’d expect, I’d eat there a lot. The tuna was something that I never considered until I finally tried it one day based on a recommendation from a guy who worked there who was a casual acquaintance, and I was pleasantly surprised. At that time, that is. And so it became one of my regular orders. (If I remember correctly, I would order a tuna with extra mayo, bacon, salt and pepper, and some banana peppers to add a bit of acid, spiciness, and texture.)

As I said, I am not doing that anymore. I don’t know if I just got unlucky or they changed what goes into that tuna but nope. (Note that there were a good number of years between the last time I ordered tuna from Subway and the time before that when I ordered it, so there was a lot of time for things to change.)

I don’t know if it’s still true but part of Subway’s business model was that the bread was baked at each store, from frozen dough. As a result, every Subway store had this weird smell that’s a tad unpleasant.

I like the smell of baking bread. Obviously, YMMV.
