I HATE summer colds.

Especially when it’s 90+ degrees.

I played softball on Monday night, and was feeling fine. On the walk back home from the game, my throat started feeling scratchy, which is always the first sign of trouble for me. By bedtime, it was really sore.

Yesterday morning i woke up and my throat was so sore i couldn’t eat. I lolled about all day, drinking heaps of water and trying to force down a little bit of food. I ached all over and my skin was over-sensitive to being touched. Last night i felt really hot, and it didn’t feel like it was just a product of the air temperature, so i got out the thermometer. Sure enough, i had hit 102.2, and was feeling pretty shitty.

Today, the fever has pretty much gone (99.4 a few minutes ago), but i’ve been hacking up phlegm and trying to clear my sinuses all day, and i still feel generally lethargic and shitty.

I guess i’m reasonably lucky. I don’t get colds very often, and this is the first i’ve had in quite a long while. But that doesn’t cheer me up very much.

All colds suck, but hot-weather colds suck big time.

Thanks for listening.

Happened to me over July 4 weekend. Ended up in bed the whole weekend and not able to see a doc until Tuesday (same symptoms as you describe, to a T) and she looked at my throat and said “Oh, dear lord God.” As I think you might be able to tell, penecillin was indicated. Actually, two courses.

That was summer SICK, now I have the summer cold. Runny nose, sneezes, general malaise, but nothing so bad that life can’t go on reasonably. Sucks. Almost worse.

Almost.

The 102.7 at 2:30 in the am was the most fun. I was a little out of it and yelling at this shadow I thought was an old woman in my room but was a big chair that had always been there. Three, four changes of clothes a day from soaked through sweat - I commiserate!

My script is easy - sorbet. Go buy four pints of Sorbet and treat your throat. You’ll get some fruit juices in there, and the cold will be oh so excellent on your throat. Pints need not all be consumed in one sitting; they may be applied liberally as needed. Refills available.

Feel better, friend.

Inky

Thanks for the kind words, and the sorbet recommendation. I’ll give it a go.

As for the doctor, i never go to the doc when i have symptoms like this, because i’ve always been under the impression that this sort of stuff is basically untreatable, and just has to be left to run its course. Maybe my policy needs rethinking.

Did the penicillin help you?

Not that it would help me very much, as i’m strongly allegic to it. But maybe there’s a substitute for folks like me.

some kind of anti-bacterial serum then, if not penecillin. Amocycillin? Sulfa compounds? No idea, but if I didn’t take them, I fully feel it would have been much much worse and lasted much much longer.

Luck.
