This thread, about all the livejournal “community” nonsense, was closed by Cajun Man for “obvious reasons.”
I hate to sound dense, but it’s really not that obvious to me. This is the second time I’ve seen the thing treated like the Fight Club on here, and I still don’t get why exactly we’re not supposed to talk about it. I’m not trying to be belligerent or argumentative; I just get the feeling that there’s some aspect of the whole thing that I’m missing…
Because the two are non-affliated and the Reader wants nothing to do with the SDMB themed (but unofficial) communities on livejournal.
It’s the same reason that there is a sticky in MPSIMS warning that you attend Dopefests at your own risk and that anything that happens there is not the responsibility of this board, its moderators, administrators, and owners and that anytime the mIRC channel is mentioned, people explicitly state that the room is in no way official.
If you really want to see it, go to livejournal.com and search under interests for sdmb. You will see it, although after you’ve seen it, you will probably wish you hadn’t.
I’m assuming that you haven’t seen it, because if you had, I figured you’d understand why they wouldn’t want references to it posted on the boards.
No kidding. It’s the “putrid, infected underside” of part? of the SDMB community. The ? denotes the fact that I can’t tell the precise number of how many snarks there are, but I get a definite idea of who some are likely to be. I don’t blame the Chicago Reader for not wanting to be associated with that, because it’s unsavory and makes the SDMB look bad.
Also, keep in mind there is more than one SDMB related LJ community. The one simply named SDMB is a just another place for Dopers to gather, and it’s a nice place. The other ones, with different names like maybe sdmbaddicts or sdmbhaters or whatever are the ones that tend to attract the anonymous crowds.*
*Those aren’t actually the names of the other anonymous style journals-I just made them up to avoid giving out the real name.
There is a “market” for such places. They would not continue if there were not people who wanted to engage in those sorts of exchanges. The issue is not to make a big deal about how terrible they are, but simply to not drag issues, comments, and links back and forth between those fora and this board.
I never go to any of them. While a couple of them, like Opal’s board, are nicely run (I’m told) and even moderated, generally they’re a hang-out for people who have been banned from these boards. Banning is not done lightly here, but we are a moderated board and we do kick out people who can’t play nice – people who can’t avoid insulting other posters, for instance, or people who can’t stop posting racist hatreds, and people who think the world owes them a living and they’re entitled to a free ride on a paid message board, and so forth. Generally speaking, they’re not the sort of people that I want to have any further dealings with.
Well, I agree with that wholeheartedly. I just find it sad and pathetic that some people feel the need for such a place, is all. It takes all kinds, I guess.

who will someday get to her proposed Charles Mingus shrine page on LJ, not only to honor Mingus, but so she’ll know what everybody else is talking about.
