Out of all the years ive been using computers, and all the years ive been on this board, I have never felt the TRUE need to bash anyone or anything. Until now! Yahoo has earned the title of being my most hated company in the history of the internet. Back when I started using the internet, computers, etc, it was all about choice. There were many search engines each with its own features and uniqueness. Recently, however, it has been narrowed down to pretty much three engines: google, MSN and yahoo. Yahoo has bought out Alltheweb, one of my favorite and most innovative search engines I have seen to date. Aparently, its conquest didnt stop there. They have ALSO bought out Inktomi, Altavista and several other engines.
I guess I’m getting tired of ranting, but I REALLY needed to vent. Fuck you YAHOO!
Do I yahoo? More like, do I have a CHOICE! :smack:
Judging by the experience I’ve had over at sports.yahoo.com, it appears their web designers wouldn’t know a Mac if you clobbered them over the head with a 17-inch Aluminum PowerBook.
Don’t let that .ru fool you, the site is in English, and you can get lotsa neato-offbeat stuff there. I especially like that “Random Resource” option, God alone knows where it’ll take you when you click it (no adult material that I’ve seen, though, but many of the sites are in Russian).
As far as searching, there are also ixquick and dogpile if you’re looking for metasearch engines to use instead of Google. Ixquick seems more inclined to give me relevant searches than Google most of the time, but I still use Google for broader searches.
In their games section they have some that aren’t Mac compatible for some reason… which isn’t a huge shock, pinhead Flash designers being what they are, but they decided to go through and not let Mac users try to play ones that were Windows-only and pop up a little message denying access… and they put that on a bunch of games I know work on Macs because I was playing them prreviously. Grrr.
Oh well, I guess that forces me to be more productive with my time. Slightly.
Regarding search engines, yeah, I don’t see the point of buying up competitors only to close them down.
I’ve found that some they say don’t work with macs, work just fine. I don’t know if they have changed anything since I had tried them, but when I used to play some of their games (collapse, cubix and a few others), they did infact work but have a note at the top saying they were not compatible.
What I was trying to say was, yes, I know some say that they don’t work with Mac but did, but at some point they switched over to preventing access completely to the game, saying that it wouldn’t work because I had a Mac so they would bother trying to load it.
