I had a telephone interview with a Fortune 400 company today at 1pm, ending at 1:30pm. At 2:15pm the recruiter called me back and said the client was “really pumped up” and was offering me the job. I accepted immediately.
Pay is 55% more than my current job. This is huge for me. It means all the difference between “barely not making it” and “living comfortably”.
Tomorrow (Friday) I get to go in and put in my 2 week notice.
Which is interesting, because my company pulled me off the phones this week and assigned me to coach less experienced people for the rest of the month.
So here’s to wishing all the rest of you underpaid, underemployed people out there good luck and good fortune on your own job hunts!
That is great news! Your current job has sounded like a bad fit for a while now - I’m so glad to hear you’ve got something that is not only not at your crappy company, but more pay, too!
I’m going to be nice on my way out. I’ve already made my criticisms. The funny bit is that for whatever they say about what I have said, I know it has made an impact because various supervisors that I have spoken to have repackaged the same message and presented it on their own, and things slowly change.
And after the one thread, I really did take those criticisms to heart.
“Unfaithful” is always comical. Back in the mid 90’s, one of my workaholic bosses asked us all to work 50 hours a week “just to show your dedication”. My response was “25% more work, 25% more pay”. Then he asked where my loyalty to the company was. I asked where the company’s loyalty to me was.
Long pause.
“Good point”
In my group meetings with our less experienced people, when they complain about the pay and the work and all that, I point to my grey beard and say “I’ve been in the tech world for 30 years. This is the third longest I’ve been anywhere. Do any of you expect to be here in 5 years? No? So don’t view this job as a career. View it as nothing more than training for your next job. Look at what you do here, and what you learn here, and then consider how it can get you your next job. You have no idea what skills you put on your resume from this place are going to get you in the door somewhere else. So learn everything you can, and just consider it to be training for something better.”
And now I can go back to them with myself as a prime example.
Although it was really my 10+ year old programming experiences that got me the job.
Well I’m off to a bad start on that, because anxiety about it is keeping me awake when I should be sleeping.
Funny thing is that in the interview they asked me if I was familiar with that part of town. I said that I was because I worked in a specific building in that area from 1986-1992. Turns out I will be working in that same building. Had no idea they had offices there. My sister works across the street.
Your new boss, if he or she has any kind of insight, will know right away you are anxious, so make that work to your advantage by letting him/her know you can’t wait to get to work, Chim!
You did your “homework” on the company, right?
So no worries. Be your best and let us know what kind of view your office has!
