I wasn’t sure if I should relay this information or not. I tend to be a pretty private person. But, I figure what the hell. I have skin cancer. I havve two melanoma cancers and three Basal cell cancers. Most of them are pretty early so I should be fine. I’m not to worried. I’ve found a pretty drastic change in my attitude today though. I’m not sure if it will last or pass. I think I’m in something of shock. I’m not really that surprised. I always figured I’d get skin cancer or some kind of cancer at some point in my life. I just never imagined it would be in my early twenties. Never imagined this would happen to me today. While I was in the middle of typing this, I got called into the HR directors office. I’ve been laid off. Again I’m not shocked. I haven’t had any work to do in the last two months. But, still. Wow. Wow. Jesus Fucking Christ. Wow. I’m really speechless at this point. Not even sure if I want to share this. Ah well. Here goes.
I’m so sorry for your news. This definitely hasnt been a good day for you. You are in my thoughts, and my good wishes are with you. Take Care.
Oh my.
Oldscratch, I am very sorry to hear this, but glad that you caught it early. I am positively paranoid about melanoma - my mother had it when she was thirty. She will be 50 this year, and it has never recurred.
Good luck with the treatments, and keep smiling. The change in your attitude - you may have found that sense of “life is precious” that many people find when faced with an illness. Don’t let it change, if you can help it
Hang in there
Kim
Dude.
Harsh.
I’m thirty, and work in the fencing/decks industry. When I was 18 I had a small chunk cut out of my back for just such a reason. (the melanoma thing, not being laid off) Anyway, since then I’ve worn T-shirts while working, applied the odd shlop of sunscreen and haven’t had a prob, so be careful and dewt says you’ll be fine.
As for being laid off, that’s a drag. My condolences.
Glad you weren’t shocked. I was the other day… touched two wires and almost fell off the damn deck. My season is pretty much over, so I’m safe and unemployed till spring. (rather be shocked)
Oh, no, I’m very sorry.
Life is to hard sometimes.
I’m going to think of you
and send you many good thoughts.
I wish you the best.
I hope you have good friends and family
that can be there for you.
It’s always good to have someone to talk with.
(((((((((kram)))))))))
As my mother say’s bad news come’s in threes, let me know about #3. Now about the rest. Cancer caught early has a high cure rate not sure about all cancers but pretty sure on skin. On the job front, fridays are not a good day to be laid off. I know from experience, why do you think i’m posting now? Go out Sunday, pick up local paper, devour the want ads. Nothing there? Monday bring resume to employment office. You will find work, maybe even better than last job, Believe in yourself.
It’s being caught early and hopefully everything will be alright . Keep up your positive thoughts and know that there are a lot of people sending goods thoughts your way.
All the best
Peter
Well, oldie, you seem to have a pretty darn good attitude about the crap that has been thrown your way. I’m not usually the sappy type, but what the hell, keep your chin up boy. Best wishes.
I hope that you will have your cancerous growths removed with no recurrences, and that now that you are laid off, you will still have health insurance to pay for the treatment.
Two relatives of mine had cancerous melanomas removed, but both were elderly, and one was fair-skinned and had red hair before it turned white. Both had successful surgery with no recurrences.
Hey bro, hang in there. Sounds like you have a grasp on things. Keep focused and come out on top. Let us know how you’re doing.
Keep hanging in oldy. You need to feel better and get a new job post haste.
I mean, how else will all of us uncultured slobs hear about all of the great eateries of Northern California?
pat
Sorry to hear that man. The good news is that skin cancer is one of the most treatable kinds of cancer. And you will find another job.
I am so sorry you have to go through this. On the up side of all of it, they caught your cancer early enough to do something about it, and there are so many companies out there begging for employees that you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a new (and probably better) job. I wish you the best. Stay positive; everything will work out.
I am sorry to hear about the cancer. And dont worry, youll probably find a better job! Good luck
I’m thinking of you Oldscratch, get well soon.
From your former neighbor on the SD People page

Sorry to hear about that, oldscratch. I’m sure they’ll eliminate all the cancer; it sounds like you caught it early. As far as the job stuff goes, if you had to get laid off, at least it happened during the time and in the place of the best job market ever. You’ll probably get a job you like even better. My husband was laid off a year ago down in southern California; that’s why we came up here and now we think it was the best thing that could have happened. May the same happen to you. If I worked up there, I’d take you out to Masa’s for a transition celebration dinner.
That’s a tough break oldscratch. But don’t worry, you can find another job, and if the cancer is caught early, I’m sure it’ll go away. Look at the bright side! You’re still in your early twenties, so you should have the strength, resilience and gumption to rebound from this rough patch you’re in.
Yikes. I’m really sorry to hear that. I love ya, man! Fuck the Bud Light, I still love ya! And you better not die on me, or I’ll hunt you down and kill you!
But seriously, the other guys are right, I’m sure you’ll pull through relatively unharmed. I’ve actually been worried about skin cancer/melanoma for a while, skin problems run in my family. So, how did you find out about this?
Anyhow, you know we all love ya, and you’ve got at least 1000 posters rooting for your good health. Be well. Don’t dissapoint us.
Oh yeah, did I mention I love ya?
What? Somebody here uttered the two nasty words that should never be put together? “Bud Light?”
Chin up, Oldscratch. Just a bump in the road.
Positive vibes your way.
EEK!
Well, it’s in the early, meaning treatable stages.
Hopefully, you have enough money to pick up COBRA, so your treatment can be covered even though you’re out of a job.
I’ll be praying for you.
Stay out of the sun.
